Sony Lens Mystery (2) — After Sony’s answer

Sony2-Test
On the time of the first discovery of the strange phenomenon, inside of a Sony’s 30mm Macro lens, I gave an enquiry to the Sony. And I got an answer from them which said :
“With reference to your enquiry and after further investigation, we would like to highlight that the Sony lens does not have a special technology used. Therefore, the focus resetting does not have to do with specific technology used inside the lens.
SONY SUPPORT TEAM
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en “
As they didn’t answer why and what for the lens focus move, I check the lens and found that even after more than 10 days, as I haven’t touch the lens (and the lens hasn’t been mounted to the Sony body = battery or super-capacitor if there was any at all inside, must be exhausted) the focus still moves. So, I further gave them an even harder test, “with 10 mm extension ring”. (photo top)

Z7+30Macro+10mm
On Nikon-Z7, the Sony SEL30m35 lens + 10 mm extension ring made quite a good close-up images and this was the closest I could go. (photo left) And a bit more distance, lens worked almost on AF mode. (photo middle) Then — while lens was kept aimed to dark object, I suddenly moved the lens (camera) to bright outside = the lens focus moved to far (photo right) then back to very close. M m m ? ? ? —– wait a moment, the LENS got 10 mm extension ring too. How come the focus to far subject like the photo right here was possible ? What kind of optics can override the 10 mm extension of the focus by a little movement of the lens ! ? ? ? It’s incredible.

Sony+10mm
So, I did test the same on Sony A7R body. The result was as you can see on those photos. = With 10 mm extension, the lens can give only very closed images (photo left) and the middle and the right photo.
With a bit of cynical view, this lens SEL30M35 (30mm Macro F3.5) can give more on the Nikon Z (with my special adapter) —– than on the genuine Sony body. 😀 What ever the Sony says, the lens keep move the focus while detecting the own position without power, as if its got own mind. This must be their special technology used inside of this lens. So, the mystery was not solved at all. 😀
(Sony might got quite a confidence to ignore a funny question, even after the Canon and the Nikon came into the full frame mirrorless market, Sony’s share is still over 60%.)

Acacia seed pod — (1.5′ over 40 cm big)

While walking on the street, I found huge seed pod of Acacia. May be no one would give a doubt that Acacia is a kind of bean. Still, not so many people expect to see their seed pod in such a size.
I said huge though, this is not the largest I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen the one got nearly 3′ / 90 cm big in Taiwan of which local people calls the Sword bean. (On the photo, you can see the size in comparison to the Mangetout bean) Still the size of the bean itself is even smaller than a soy bean. —– so, it creates a question why this Acacia seed pod evolved into such a size ? In Africa where the tree was originated, the biggest enemy was a Giraffe kind. If the seed was eaten by them before the seed matured, all the effort of Acacia became in vain. But the grown up dry seed and the pod may not invite any animal who could spread the seeds away from the parent’s place. —– What are they doing ? ? ?
—– Nature must have much wiser idea than me. 😀

ZM2 Lens – Spring Walk

First visitor here tonight was from USA, seeking Plum Flower. So, I’ll show you many Cherry flowers, Plum Flowers.
You may not believe though, all those photos here were taken by just one lens, (homemade ZM2 lens, on Nikon Z7 camera — ISO 100, AV setting) Slight difference of the focus, the lens can produce quite different kind of image !

This plant called Japonica Japan was originated from Japan as its name suggests, and a cousin of Quince, or relative of Pear. Incidentally, a name Nipponia Nippon which meaning is the same (Nippon is the formal name — Japan is a nick name after Marco Paulo) was for national birds Toki who has been nearly extinct and revived to about 150 now.

Ever cute Snow drop, Japanese name is Yukiwari-so (雪割草) which mean the flower who sprout out the snow !

I found this variety of cherry first time in this country. Still no idea of its name.

And this is somewhat close to the plum. (But not Japanese Ume 梅 —– I don’t know why Ume didn’t come here.)

And this is Daphne —– somewhat related to Cloves though, the story was very complicated = lots of misunderstanding. (You might have seen a furniture made by a wood called Mahogany but never know what its tree looks like.)
Same as that, the wood for burning incense Agarwood 沈香 was a mystery to the Japanese for many hundreds of years, and people mistook this plant was related to Cloves 丁字 (hence Japanese misnamed this Daphne as 沈丁花---on both case the letter 丁 represents the shape of nails which is a shape of the Cloves as well and the smell of this flower is the same to the Cloves though) those plants are in fact totally different plant.
Since Agarwood can be sold for very high price, the tree has been pushed to near extinction = now they are protected and the genuine wood is hard to come by, so that, there said to be a lots of fake in the market. ( = a wood dripped into an artificial incense was sold to the tourists.)

Crocus is a relative of the Saffron. (So, don’t eat them)

(In fact, Daffodil is also poisonous — if you eat = Who eat ?)

I guess this cherry seems to be originated from Yama-zakura. — but not sure of its multi-petal flowers.

So, it was a nice walk and shootings.

Those three photos were somewhat an extra. I met Ms.S and Mr.M as a next door of one of the cherry flower’s place. They got very fancy bicycle with motor. (And those photos were for them to copy from here)

Go out with ZM2 Lens (First field test)

It’s a rare bright day. And the spring is coming. (Olegon Maple started flowering)

I didn’t know there was a gallery here. (but not open today ?)

It’s hard to tell whether the aberration of this lens, ZM2 is coma or astigmatism ? (The camera was Nikon Z7.) Do you want to see this photo in normal sharp image ? I don’t think so. This is what this photo should be.

Is it an image from a dream or nightmare ? Or, premonition ?

The difference of those two was just a slight move of focus. (Since the DOF was so shallow, slight move suddenly makes the image collapse. )

You might be wondering, how such hopeless lens can still makes decent image in the same time. (That’s why I said peculiar and I like it very much.) 😀

Peace to everybody.

In law trouble

While browsing the Net, I encountered a kind of board where people put their story or accusation, complaint etc in their life. People may also dumping their frustration or showing off their successful plot or revenge etc as well. M m m —– Then suddenly, I realized that there is one of the life’s heaviest paradox of which I’ve been able to avoid as a single monk.
While growing up, whether as good boy, bad boy or good girl, bad girl regardless, whether they got any qualification and gained any good social skill OR NOT, almost of all in equal term, they get marry or became a in-law of the husband or wife. Then naturally, the drama starts between those newly joined members and old families. Elder brother’s wife may take advantage to be a senior position and bully even steal a things with an excuse of I just borrowed it as in the same family and just forgot to return etc. etc. The more audacious win. Even if it was an obvious crime, Police is not very keen to intervene the family matter = giving an impression of free to go. (If Police try to prosecute, suddenly the witness change etc, because of the pressure from the close ties etc. etc. —— Police knows those entangled emotional situation too well etc. etc. )
You may choose your spouse but you can’t avoid your in-law. Unlike to get a job, you don’t need any qualification or intelligence to become in-law as there is no test or interview. Even worse, so-called commonsense may not to be shared by others neither no enforcement. They can say, that’s who I am, its my right to be me. So, hell opened. —– And the very hell is where they thrive. They grab what ever they want and getaway in a midst of chaos.
For introduction, or a match making party, at least a kind of selection of school or society, still in reality, most of the people find their spouse mostly by chance without knowing any detail of the person let alone its relatives. And suddenly those people may come to your room with spare key. Asserting that they have a right to demand and do so as a relatives (even if they are only in-law).
Their logic is, as the declaration of human right says, everybody got the equal right to claim their share of happiness. Especially among the same family, the happiness and the wealth has to be shared equal. Therefore your expensive jewelry also belong to me etc. So, I don’t need to ask you because, it IS mine. Don’t you understand ?
Everybody got an equal right to get marry to almost anybody yet still, all the trouble might be caused by “who the person IS” which has been almost out of scope when he or she start their relation (they were hot in love and believing nothing else is a matter, don’t interfere us). —– So does, anybody has a freedom to choose own life-style as it is their own business and their right — Then suddenly the floodgate opened as a in-law. It seems it is a most convenient excuse to an uneducated EX-hooligan to start bullying, make the younger in-law to easiest target. —– If you see the hi-school boys, girls, in the town you may understand how such in-law was going to be mass-produced. —– it’s a trouble isn’t it ? To have the individual right and the freedom and the peaceful social harmony in the same time seemed to be impossible. But, that’s what the world is.

ZM-2 lens (Second version)

———————- (ZM2 sample photo —– fake stage up)
There wasn’t so much complaint to ZM lens —– still, give a thought or two = even though I said most peculiar, the reality was not peculiar enough, just another mediocre lens.

Before, while experimenting with the lens, I noticed that this lens can produce much more aberration when it was reverse mounted. = So, why not. = I further modified the lens optics made reversed.

The result was, some may say, a lens impossible to use. (Somewhat comparable to the Helicoid-B lens which got strong astigmat aberration ) Yet still, this might be what I needed. (What’s wrong ? ) 😀 (as you can see from the photos, DOF is extremely shallow, and showing very heavy coma aberration. This lens was about 45mm F2 equivalent, fully open, still if well focused, image looks quite sharp.) —– now I need to find the suitable subject. (I hope the subject wouldn’t be frightened and runaway ) 😀

Is it peculiar enough ? (just a bit off focus)

And this is well focused (so far). 😀

Lucky in life = Fate
Somebody asked me, like the time when I modified Leiz Elmarit P lens or ZM lens kind, while using 58mm helicoid ring, how I could manage to find the necessary rings etc in such efficient way ? My answer was, There was no such good luck to find the component. It was just work hard to try fix. Not a good luck or magic finger, just came to a good result thanks to all those effort. (No wonder)

Yet still, the start was a chance discovery of the 58mm reverse adapter for Nikon-Z mount. If I need to attach something to a camera, there are two choices, one is find a cheap adapter ring such as M42 to EOS, M42 to Nikon Ai kind, otherwise use a body cap. To make something for Nikon-Z, their body cap was hefty £6. Then I found a 58mm adapter for Nikon-Z about £3 or so. —– If you may say I was lucky, yes, it was lucky. Still, I’m puzzled why this adapter was made in the first place, especially for what in mind ? I’m not sure whether many redundant lens which got 58mm filter size, waiting to be experimented on the newly arrived Nikon-Z camera ? ? ?
What ever, the first piece of jig-saw was placed. For this 58mm ring, I got an idea to use a 58mm mount helicoid ring. Then, to mount a lens, I need to find something to join from lens to 58mm helicoid. Here, there is no inspiration kind but just try next by next among the mountain of rings I got. (Even the same 52 to 55mm step-up ring, inside diameter of 52 mm screw is not the same = need to test) To mount the Elmarit lens, it got to be a 49mm filter ring = 49 to 52, 52 to 55, 55 to 58 then to the helicoid. (Instead to use cheaper 42mm, why 58mm helicoid was, since the Nikon-Z image sensor was too close to the mount, 42mm ring will cut the image corner.) Those step-up rings adding 3mm each for the distance between lens to the body, I still needed to put the lens further away from the camera, I used an old Nikon extension ring K-5.
But, when I did the same to ZM lens, I needed to have less distance to mount the lens. = instead to use 58 to 55, 55 to 52, 52 to 49, 49 to 46mm, I ordered 58 to 46mm ring and waited a mail from China long time. So, the work rely on the simple but rudimental try. — and waiting game. No ingenious solution, neither Devine help. (You see, I’m a very good worker = good work and its mind pulls good Karma.) 😀
The original meaning of the Karma is the rational, natural consequence (such as, the heat makes the water boil) not a paranoid delusion (typically so-called consequence of previous life (= Hindu idea) — there is no previous life, since no perpetual soul could exist) = its mean, straight positive effort causes positive consequence (and evil act / idea repercussions) = those rational makes your Fate ! Fate is not a kind of supernatural phenomena. Heaven is too busy to twist every individual’s life. Everything occurs just as a simple own cause and a consequence. Too much thinking tend to make you a hero of victimization though a matter of fact, the world is not bothering you as such you are imagining. They got their own business.
So, anybody can make a lens. = You can try. (But first, you have to find a lens to play with !)
.
Karma – Fate – (3)

This is yet another 8150 story. On my life, the sign 8150 is regularly appear here and there = nothing special or I would say, they are a kind of road sign, OK to go. Yet still, it may seen quite odd or even a supernatural phenomenon to others eyes.
In the world, there is a kind of people who proclaims that they ARE the chosen people though, it seems if it was a case they seemed to have far more share of the bad fortune all through the history. = It doesn’t seem that the God is anywhere near to their side. From the eastern view, the idea of a personified God speaks same language and negotiable, sounds too odd, in comparison to the absolute eastern Heaven. They are more like a children’s bed time story. Yet still, you are free to believe any story.
Lord Buddha, as the enlightened teacher, he didn’t believe a God kind or after life as they are too irrational, and banned the magic kind of deceptive practice to his followers. (Its mean, Tantra’s “Magic words”= Dharani is not the Buddhism, neither all sorts of Mahayana fantasies are nothing to do with the original teachings. (They are the stories borrowed from the Veda = Brahmanism / Hinduism.)
Yet still, the belief of the Dharma and the Karma is in the teachings. So, where those two seemingly conflicting idea reconcile ? —– In fact, they are the real phenomena and its rules. They themselves exists like a phenomenon of lightning or thunder, they exists without the imaginary god of lightning or thunder. = Such Gods are nothing more than a children’s story.
So, does it mean, the Dharma and Karma are just the visible phenomena ? or actual occurrences ? —– the rules rules behind = invisible. Those ruler IS the western equivalent of the God, but the Rules or Heaven is almost the abstract, —– we only see its sign. And in my case, the sign was the number 8150 (and its variation). When I see it’s there, I feel a kind of approval of me doing it. Still, to find the address of the seller in China was also 8150 (in fact 518000) frightened me. (By the way, the mysterious lens I talked about also having that number —– its mean, I was right to speak out) 😀 —– So, what’s all those mean ? Even though, the Karma is abstract, it IS watching us and ruling our life. It is not an imaginary existence. It’s real. (at least on my life = I was born to have this life while possessing the palm line which is saying the same = So, its benefit is, I don’t get ill or get accident. Except getting old. 😀 — getting old is a nature of the Karma ) —– I wouldn’t boast such as that I was chosen but I’m actuary seeing the Karma / Dharma is with me. —– though, as an honest feeling, it is a bit bothersome = leave me alone. I want to have a bit more naughty life away from their watchful eyes. 😀 )

ZM lens — the most peculiar lens so far

In fact this was not the first time this lens appeared here. Before, the lens got different guise and used with awkward tilting bellows. Yet still, using the same approach like the Leiz Elmarit P lens, I wanted to give a new lease of life to this one.

Same as that Elmarit projection lens, the construction was done by just put together readily available component from the Net (except only one glue pont). (Helicoid ring got 25~55mm extension and able to make 25cm close up for x0.7 image. Focal length was about 45mm and F2)

As I wrote before, the origin of this lens was not known — probably the front element of a zoom lens. Under the certain handling, the lens can give pretty good image.

So, it is a sharp detailed image ——— (so far) 😀

However, with a bit different focus, suddenly the lens makes totally different kind of image. (You may not believe its the same lens) = as you can see the photo right, the depth of field was very shallow and the bokeh (+ halation) is amazingly strong.
Lens seemed to have 2 element still no apparent aberration exists. —– but I can not guess why the lens can make such prominent bokeh where it was not in focus. ( fore-focus seemed to make coma like aberration = So, to make a focus on the edge, the image with bokeh appeared —– as long as it was in the focus, the image is sharp, though, once it was out of focus, suddenly the image became very blurred.)
How strange ? ? ?
.
Sony lens Mystery ? ? ? (Focus moves without power)

Sony FE lens for E-mount has 18mm frangeback and Nikon-Z camera was designed to have the distance from the mount to image sensor 16mm = in the traditional sence, this 2mm gap can easily be overcome by the focus adjustment (infinity may come with a bit of rotation) by extend the focus 2mm more. Yet, I do know the Sony lens was fixed to the minimum F-aperture and there is no manual focus ( = so-called focus by wire) when it was not connected to the Sony camera. = no point for attempt to use the lens anywhere else.

Though, as I made a lens mount adapter NEX (Sony E) to Nik-Z, I needed to find where the exact top point of the ring, before the Nik-Z mount ring and the bayonet part of the Sony lens cap was fixed. Then I discovered very strange phenomenon of the Sony lens’ behavior.

(The shape of internal shade appeared on the image = it never happen when the lens was used on the Sony body — in any distance, in any F-aperture = seemingly it is only to destruct the experiment. The truth was that this lens SEL30M35 was for APS-C cropped size = not for the full frame = black frame shows the size of APS-C image and the image on the A7R finder was in fact digitally enlarged 50mm equivalent image. )
At first sight, the lens seems to be frozen at the closest focus position —– In that case, I should click the camera (Nik-Z) to close-up test, then utterly unexpectedly, the focus of the lens jumped to infinity ! I couldn’t believe my eyes. On the repeated test, the lens behaved like this again.
(Note, only the Sony Macro 30mm showed this strange phenomenon, not with other lenses such as 12~24mm Zoom or Zeiss 55mm F1.8)

Since the lens was not mounted to the Sony body, its mean no connection to the power supply, how the focus motor can move ? ? ? —– (Is Sony lens got internal power back-up inside of the lens barrel, such as a super capacitor ?) —– The most peculiar things was, how the lens did know if the lens was mounted on the camera (even though it was not on Sony camera) and aimed at a close subject or not ? ? ? In other words, when the Nik-Z and the Lens was left alone or lens alone, it doesn’t move at all, as if the lens got its own self-awareness ! Otherwise, who is activating this phenomenon ? (Further test found that the lens alone ( without being mounted to any camera (Sony or Nikon which ever)) moves = both F-Aperture and Focus moves = the lens got internal power back-up —– When the lens was aimed to dark object = Focus moves to far, and if it was aimed to bright subject (such as the Sky) the focus moves to the closest.) (Microchip may operate with little power though, the motor driving the lens for AF needs a certain amount of power = even a super capacitor can not operate long.) The another question is, is it only to annoy the people ? ( —– to whom ? —– How many people in the world would experiment like this, other than me ! ? ) otherwise what is it for ? = It’s nothing but a mystery is it ! ? ? ?
Sony’s camera division was created by the former Minolta people who developed the world first Auto Focus SLR, Alpha 7000. Once I was invited to visit Minolta’s Osaka HQ as a camera critics and met Mr.Kobori who lead the creation of A7000 system. However, why Minolta couldn’t keep the position of top runner was, that they gone too far on the system design. = Try to fulfill all the possibility of the photography, then trespassed the secret of the individual creativity. So that, despised by the top photographer (Even if they do use the same technique, they don’t want it given by the camera.) —– while looking back, I’m not sure whether the bad habit or paranoia of the Minolta people still hanging around Sony’s floor ? ? ? 😀 (Isn’t this a paranormal, or horror story ? This is a camera equivalent of a severed head speaks ! — If not a poltergeist ) 😀
To see if it was a joke or accident, I tested them again.

The Sony 30mm Macro was mounted on Nikon-Z via homemade NEX to Nik-Z adapter, when the Nikon-Z was switched on, the image appeared then with a bit of noise the black frame appeared (photo left) as the lens focus seemed to be close up, I aimed the camera out of window (photo right)

And, I put an object for close up —– then spontaneously the focus was moved to infinity, seemingly to destruct the close up image ! (Strange ! — Image sensor is Nikon-Z side which was not connected to the Sony lens —– How the lens did know it was a close-up image ? ? ?) (I wonder, if the devices started to communicate each other with a common code by NFC, Near Field Communication kind = rather futuristic horror story isn’t it ?)
All those were happened while the lens 30mm Macro was on the NEX to Nik-Z adapter, its mean, the lens was having no power supply or feed back from the camera body.
(Yet still, as I said few lines before, if the devices started to communicate, and using RFID like system, lens may able to receive the Info’ even a power from the camera body ! —– and near future, the camera may starts to beep beep you “The girl sitting over there is a well-known model, would you like to take her picture ? ” ) 😀
Still, the question is the same = What makes the lens focus move without power without intelligence of the image. What was that for ? (I need to ask SONY —– I gave an inquiry of which the Case number was 18 ****8 —– Who answer me ? ? ? —– In fact, I wonder how many technician in Sony ever got knowledge of this ?)
——————————————————————————————————————————————–
After I discovered that the lens keeps moving whether it was mounted on the Nikon (using homemade NEX to NikZ adaptor) or left alone. So, they were the photographic evidences of Sony (or Minolta) zombie state.

When the lens detects the light, its focus moved to closest (photo left) When the lens detect no light (ie; dark) focus was fixed to far — Then suddenly take the lens cap off and aimed to the outside, the focus move back to closest = So, this picture was just before the focus moves (photo right) (I have no idea what sort of the game Sony heated up ? ? ? —– But, the game against to whom ? —– It seems all those strange activities were to make this APS-C lens work on a full-frame A7R body = automatically adjust the 30mm image zoom-up to 50mm equivalent image. ) 😀
