Simple LIFE / Humble LIFE
Simple life —– well well well. I’m well aware that I’ve been using this word rather casually and often.
After all, Zen Buddhism is not what we talk or think, but practice.
So, in practice am I having simple life ? ? ? —- In one glance, it is untrue.
I’m doing too many things and being involved too many activities —– often not necessary they
are what I’ve intended. They just happened and came to my hand.
But, this is the most important core teaching in the ZEN.
When I do anything I only do one thing ( at a time ) = because of I’m doing only one thing,
it is very simple. Just Do It.
non
Then Humble Life —– ? This is definitely true on me. Anyone can see it in distance.
May be indistinguishable from a vagrant. Far remote of any concept of fashion, still strangely people says,
they can find me in the cloud easily since I’m looks always the same 😀
A secret behind of this, I’m buying the same cloths, some time many at once —– my signature attire of
white pullover, I got almost identical 5 of them.
When I buy underwear or socks kind, I buy many of them in one go, or after gave a close look and when
I found it is a good product, I go back to the shop and buy up many of them.
Like the socks, if they are all same made, I don’t need to have a trouble to find a matching pair 😀
After all, I’m lazy to think what to ware ( I don’t care the package, the matter is the contents ) —– if
the package is the same, I don’t need to think about when I put. It’s true isn’t it ?
Laziness lead to the simplicity. This is what the humble life become simple life. Ha ha ha. 😀
non
While having much enough to think about for a project or design, I wouldn’t like to spare the time to
mundane things —– sorry I wouldn’t pay much of attention to the room decoration.
Zen wouldn’t chase two rabbits, since we got only one life. ( And we don’t wait to have another
life to finish the project —– as nobody ever did = nobody ever enlightened in the next life,
since no such things ever exists in this world —– even Dalai Lama had to learn the Buddhism
from scratch = where all the wisdom supposed to be accumulated in his previous 13 lives ? )
So, Just Do It, while it is in your hand.

Bowl of Water Zen
When I was talking about Zen practice with others, someone mentioned a BBC news which
showed a group of Chinese Zen monks are walking while carrying a bowl of water
as their Zen practice. —– “ Oh, what a good idea. It’s a good practice to learn Zen Mind “
—
( It’s easy to try this. Fill the water to the top of bowl about 8″ big and holding it to your chest high and walk.
By doing this, you can observe your state of the mind, how steady and calm your mind is.
Strangely you may find, the more you concentrate and gaze the water the more it shakes 😀
—– when your mind is almost detouched from the water or whole action, then the water become still and
make no drip while you are walking —- then you can fill even more water reaching to the edge. It’s a fun !)
non
In this blog, I’ve been talking that any action could be a Zen practice, hence in one post I talked about
[Lemon Zen] and the other post, [Walking Zen] in fact I also mentioned about the effects of even riding
a bicycle or typing —– any repeating action could have the same effect to reach
a state of the Mind of No-Mind or Mushin.
non
In fact everybody is doing the action of walking in Mushin = nobody is thinking when and how to move
the right leg after left leg has moved. —– It’s all done unconsciously.
So that, the practice of Mushin ( and the Mindfulness of cause — if a part of the brain is not fully engaged
for the walking, we can not automatically adjust the leg movement following the slight change of a condition
of the road surface) is not necessary an exotic funny action.
non
Then inevitable question arose —– if the walking is the practice of Mushin which everybody is doing,
why not everybody is an accomplished Zen Master.
Here is a funny but fundamental paradox of the Zen Buddhism. When the Mushin in walking is the
Zen, it is the Zen. —– but otherwise it is just an unconscious action of walking.
non
Buddha didn’t perform any fancy or peculiar action. It was just a simple ordinary daily life, yet
as it was repeated every day, each action was almost identical every time.
This simplified and fixed way of each practice is the requisite condition of [the Life in Mushin].
Buddha’s life style was the text-book and the disciples were learned and copied those action, and in the process,
disciples learned the Mushin ( or the state of the No-Mind was developed in them).
non
Because of the state of the mind can not be learned by the word, but only by the practice ( like any
emotion, unless a person has experienced it, the description of feeling couldn’t make any sense )
and this is the reason why non of the ancient scripture was actually talking about No-Mind, but only No-Self.
( No-Self = No-Mind —– still able to live as a person is because there is the enough program in our
Subconsciousness which is invisible —– like what I am talking here, is a new interpretation after Freud invented
a notion of Subconscious = which was not exists in the ancient time )
non
And there is yet another paradox in the Buddhism.
To live the Life in Mushin is what all about the Buddhism though, no-mind, no thinking, BUT unless it
was understood as the Buddhism, it wouldn’t become the Buddhism.
Anybody can carry a full of water in a bowl, and time to time the one may need to do it. Just carry a cup of tea
happen to be full to the edge, from kitchen to a table —– some may succeed it while making no single drip, yet
some may make a mess. What makes a difference ?
Calm mind, hence a steady hand is the crucial point here = a kind of thought “ Oh, I’ve put
too much. I’m silly. I would spill a mess on the floor. etc. “ would make a hand even more
wobbly and the tea would drip here and there 😀
non
A person can practice this and acquire better coordination on the hand, so that it will be programmed into
the motor legion of the brain and may become a routine movement. But, that all.
BUT, if a person practised this, under a file name of the Zen Buddhism, the file become
accessible in any moment when it need to have a calm mind in your life.
Carrying a full of water as Zen, it become the Zen with its effects.
Once a person acquired this file with the attachment of the notion of Zen and its spiritual implication,
the file would be applied to any action and any situation in the Life, hence, walking is the Zen, cutting a lemon
is the Zen, and even facing Tsunami Wave could be handled in a calm mind and able to act in the best way
or see the fate with calm clear eyes. (Sorry to the victims of Tsunami)
With this Paradox ( has to live without thoughts, preconception etc, still needs to organize its notion of
Mushin as the practice of Zen Buddhism) Buddha has asserted “ There is the way, which is to be
pursued as the way of Buddhism “ since in his earliest teachings as one of the Four Noble Truth.
non
This notion makes the difference between Mushin to just to be an ignorant thoughtless.
Though, the notion itself is nothing complicated = just to be aware [to carry a bowl of water is for Zen]
—– with this awareness, just Do It and keep doing it —– then suddenly you will find that you can do it without
spilling a single drip of water, and realized while doing it you didn’t need to think anything = Just Did It !
———-
Then observe yourself, while doing even other things, are you just doing it as well, without having any
useless thought ? (You may achieve this in few weeks or may be taking few years. Just carry on. —– then you
might be noticed, you have been having no upheaval in your life and strangely, quite unexpected
or too good to be true kind of coincidences has been happening, yet no one can tell why
—– Just carry on with your LIFE without questioning. ) —–This is a Zen Buddhist’s LIFE.

How to reach ZEN MIND ?
Someone asked me “ Hey Yoshizen, I read your [Will-power] post and understand what
ZEN MIND is, —– the question is HOW to reach there ?
Well, this is the question worth one’s life.
It costed Master Bodhidharma who started the practice of ZEN, for his 9 years sitting, and costed me just
to have a glimmer of idea, 3 years Disco Dancing. 😀 And yet another 20 odd years more of experiments.
And I’ve written many times before, but repeat it here referring the last post.
> > Buddhist has completely different psyche —– there was no will at all, hence those
—– Masters got enlightenment ! ( Buddhist doesn’t intentionally pursuit the goal by will
—– but to set the goal as the default = if nothing else is there, what else can we wish for ? )
—– When (to his eyes) no chocolate is there, why want to eat chocolate —> once this kind
—–of mind became the norm, do something by the will doesn’t need a chocolate
MIND or the information process in the Brain has distinctive tendency, If the same signals are repeated,
the response becomes routine or the signals will be completely ignored in order to save the energy
by short-cut or shut-out. This is an acclimation ( acclimatization) process of the brain and the physiology.
If you eat chocolate all-day, ton of it, soon you will fed-up with it ( it’s a metaphor don’t try this in home and
I wouldn’t presume any responsibility of its consequence ) = you become immune to it. Even hate it.
Or if you love your partner, love a lot, a lot for 7 years equivalent amount (Well, some says 2 years these days)
she ( or he ?) become either part of yourself or invisible. In both case she or he no longer bother your Mind
(= hence brain can save energy) = life just goes on as it is. —– It’s a Peace !
—– If he wants to do [A], Just Do [A] —– anyhow nothing else is in the scope.
—– But to choose [A] out of 26 and try to do, it may need to think and use a will.
—- —– But if nothing else is there, it is only a thing he can do.
So that, if you think and try doing it [A] all-day, next day, repeating million times = it become routine.
Then, You become able to do it automatic = without thinking.
Strangely, once you master this, by doing [A], you are able to use the same mind-set to any other subject
in any moment at once. The fundamental OS (operation system) of the brain changed to Zen Type.
Non
Buddha had been doing this in his daily life (life was simple, handling only few same things
everyday = routine, as he went through the life of austere already, he didn’t need much)
—– the followers copied his action and later realized the hidden effect as it is the way to get
the State of Mushin (Mind of No-Mind) = routine work without thinking.
Since then, all the Buddhist’s sect having a simple repeating act in their Buddhists practice.
Especially the Master Bodhidharma was the one who used the effect of repeating action as
the main tool to get the state of Mushin and the Enlightenment which is known as ZEN.
Therefore, repeating or bombarding the brain with the same signal ( as long as it is the same
stimulant = thinking or action) the brain reacts the same —> either it became routine
or immune.
Then once this tendency was established, the brain become able to handle any signal, either
completely ignore it or automatically reacts with full concentrated force. — This is the ZEN.
It is obvious, if anyone did [A], million times, he must become an expert, and able to do while eyes closed,
without thinking, but with exactly same precision.
Yet strange phenomenon is that the person who mastered to do the thing without thinking, also become able
to see (or concentrate) only the subject and able to [not to see] others. Then, if necessary not to see anything.
Since the brain become more efficient, not waste energy or time, it able to see something new
or its wider implications = hidden meaning and the truth.
And, some become able to see which is invisible to others. (Literally, third eyes, or Hyper vision = able to see
such as a high-speed movement in slow-motion) —– all by the training of sensory.
(It is rather well-known phenomenon, a person encounter such as a car-accident or explosion
seeing the moving scene in slow-motion. This is the Hyper-vision) —– ZEN is only using
natural body and brain capability, but just enhancing it. —– no fancy magic or placebo effects.
( That’s why the past Masters described it as ” Dog Shit” as it was nothing special or miraculous. 😀 )

Tiny LIFE
( What I casually called Mayfly here was in fact Green lacewing / Chrisopidae )
Some days ago, short floss like thing standing on the edge of the book, caught my eyes ? ? ?
At second glance, I realized, it was an egg of the Mayfly. Then I remembered a
Mayfly was flapping around the table lamp a night or two before. = so, she laid an egg ! ?
While looking around —– I found four more those eggs
here and there. —– And I found a dead Mayfly too.
—– M m m m # ? # ?. What a hell ! What should I do ? ? ?
non
I don’t like it. Absolutely not welcome at all.
Even if those eggs hatched, there is no food for its larvae
—– simply I can’t take care of them.
—– and if I pick and throw them out, the eggs will be
eaten by other small creepy crawlies.
—– In any choice, those small life would be doomed —– isn’t there any alternative ? ? ?
non
So that I decided to take picture of them = at least, Mayfly could contribute something to
the world —– ( really ? —– for what extent ? ) —– Don’t ask me, it’s a sheer excuse.
But, to take picture of such minute subject is not easy. As my macro photo system has been
disappeared somewhere I decided to make it using cheap Chinese Micro-scope Lens.
( Using wide-angle lens with reverse adopter could make large magnification though its big
shoulder prevent to access small corner to take picture of this kind of fixed object )
So, I wound a wire around the screw mount of the microscope lens (and partly soldered / Photo above left )
then glued this ring on top of a splay can which happen to have suitable diameter ( Photo, middle ) and
put LED focus light —– here the Macro Photo Adopter for Canon EOS.
( can was mounted on a Canon body cap —– with a cut-out hole in the middle, of cause 🙂 )
What a hustle you might say. Yes it was a hustle in deed. To holding a wire ring in the dead centre
of a mouth of can while keeping it exactly parallel (well, sort of 🙂 ) and filling the 2.3 mm gap around
of it, using Araldite glue etc. etc, a lots of work.
non
But don’t forget the life of a small Mayfly —– she unfortunately end-up her life in this room though,
at least she did her best, surviving few days without drinking any water (may be — I know not) and
laid the eggs which was her duty in her life.
At least, I have to respond to the encounter with this life —– it is the duty to be a Buddhist.
Squeezing the brain and find the way to solve the technical difficulties and achieve ( at least in the
acceptable standard 🙂 ) the necessary objective —– is the Zen ( in action ).
This is what I’ve been saying “ Do It “ not wasting the time thinking.
—– Um m, the result seems not too bad. ( I think —– for an almost cost nothing hand-made device 😀 )
( Quality of the images is not as good as Zeiss apo-chromat lens I used to use, but think about the price 😀 )
___/\___
PS : The stem or egg supporting rod (?) is nothing but a wonder of the nature. How the secluded liquid
—– can instantly harden and able to hold the egg on top. —– If anybody know the scientific research of
—– this, please let me know. (Incidentally, the rainbow color on top photo was created by the optical
—– diffraction of the transparent membrane of the wing. —– it’s mean, the thickness of this film is as thin
—– as a wave length of the light ! — isn’t this incredible ? Man’s technology is still behind of the nature )
PPS ; After many years of having had their visit here, this year I came to the resolution, how to deal with
—— them. = When ever I saw them flying under the light, catch them and throw them out of window.
—— Watching them fly or take rest on somewhere —– might be amazing or interesting and giving a water
—— or piece of fruits etc. may seems to be an act of friendship or what so ever. IT IS our arrogance
—— and on the end, it would do nothing good to them. They don’t belong to this room and there is no
—— prospect for them to have their fruitful life here. Throw them out where they belong = NATURE.
—— It is the most kind and friendly things we can do to them.
It is often the case, without giving a help and leave a person in their own device could be
the most kind things to do to the person’s life.

Why TALK, Why Blog ?
It is the most fundamental contradiction in Zen Blog. Which I’m well aware.
Zen is after all, [in practice] how to live. Not a system of thinking or idea. Nor dubious magic at all.
Therefore, if any notion or thinking of even an idea of spirituality or any religious notion is there, it is
not the Zen but mere pretence.
In Zen, because of no preconceived idea or thinking is there (or no longer there) it is described as Mushin
and having the eyes to see the subjects without preconception, it is fully opened clear eyes by which
the one can see the object as it is, hence, there couldn’t be any barrier between
seeing and be seen = it is the Oneness / Ichijo.
Seeing and be seen are no longer there as the separate entity, hence no Self could exist
—– all those are not a logical conclusion or answer, but just a state of the brain.
( Brain is not only for thinking 🙂 )
non
State of the brain ( In fact, the balance of hormone, Dopamine and Serotonin etc) will be
reflected to one’s feeling and the actual action, so does to the results ( hence to the one’s Karma)
not as a revealing words. ( Because, Zen is not a word game but real dairy life )
non
This is the Buddhism of which Buddha taught.
To learn this, the followers literally followed
Buddha and copied what he does, down to the minute details, since
Buddha himself was the teachings itself. And as
Buddha did practice his own dairy life according to the Dharma,
and himself was a part of the Dharma too, his actions or practices were the Dharma.
( So that the recordings of those teachings were also called as Dharma, and those practices has been reflected
into the Zen Buddhism, such as in the Soto Zen, there is no verbal communication but just follow the practice,
and through practice, the learning could be achieved and even sudden realization could be occurred,
which was called Direct Transmission )
non
—– this is the reason why I feel deeply paradoxical to talk about Zen, let alone blogging.
In the so-called Buddha’s biography, there was the story of
Buddha’s hesitation to teach what he found in his Enlightenment, which was needed a persuasion of
the Brahman to start.
(So far I couldn’t find the origin of this story in the Scripture —– the author of the biography must have
really deep understanding of the Buddhism and had the insight )
Buddhism having inherent trouble refusing to be explained by the words.
Understanding or so-called enlightenment may just come while practising.
So that, I can definitely say, Just Do it.

Is MUSHIN same as Thoughtless ?
Well, it is not about a Justice / Punishment from the heaven but about the mind-set.
Non
These days our topics were often related to the Riot, and there was an interesting question.
“Wasn’t the mind-set of [senseless] [thoughtless] behaviour, same to the Zen
Buddhist’s [Mushin]. —– What makes the difference between them ? ? ? “
—– in fact, someone who put a comment to the previous post had the same thinking.
And this question has so many implication and the facets.
—– Once, Pablo Picasso said “ Keep drawing like a child is the hardest things in the Art”
—– Then, “what is the difference between [Innocence] or [Ignorance] to the [Mushin] ? “
May be the easiest answer to this question is, just whack the person shouting “Idiot” —– really ?
non
There was an interesting story among the legend of the Sword Masters.
In the Samurai era, top sword-man was roving around the country seeking the contest-match
against each other, in order to achieve the record / reputation. ( And the winner was invited to
give a lesson to the local Lord receiving good reward)
Then, someone got an idea of plank, dressed up an ignorant peasant as a respectable
samurai, claiming that this is the supreme sword-master, and challenging top local
sword-master.
On the match, the peasant was just standing facing real master just having his sword down.
As the peasant had a slightest idea of what the sword-mastery is, he was just standing still.
The challenged was the master who knows everything —– but as the opponent seemed to
standing utterly defenceless —– almost like an idiot (in fact he was an idiot) it made the master
utterly confused. —– no such things could happen here. Otherwise it must be a ploy to make
the master wrong-foot = this man must be a real sword-master and able to kill him instant.
—– it was what the master felt. (To his eyes, the peasant’s utter ignorant appearance, not even
recognize him was seen as the ultimate Mushin only possessed by a supream sword-master 😀 )
Then, the master throw his sword away, and kneel down for begging his life.
—————
The pair prankster succeeded all the contest-match in the same way.
But, after a while, the peasant started to wonder why those famous masters just give up and
kneel down to him. And interested in to use the sword, as he mistook that he is in deed a
strong sword-master and able to kill the opponent.
So that, on the next match, peasant break a stillness and showed a slight sign of intention.
Then, the challenged sword-master instantly reacted to this sign, sway the body to other
direction and cut the peasant into two pieces. (The End 😀 )
non
It is true, even a Zen Master has used a metaphor of the mind of small child
to describe the Mushin and a state of mind of Jizai.
And in the Buddhist’s arguments about the universality / inclusiveness of the Mahayana stance,
this matter —– What is the distinction between [Innocence, Ignorance, Senseless,
Thoughtless] to the [Mushin] is some time mixed-up.
As a matter of fact, when it is convenient, this kind of metaphor has been often used though,
[The Mushin] is a very specific, peculiar state of the mind, nothing similar to any of
those mind. Not just the matter of inclusiveness of the Mahayana, but also the confusion of the
[ What is the Buddhist’s mind] ( before this, What is the Buddhist ? —– there are all sorts of the
Buddhist exists —– Such as to enjoy the life having the eyes to appreciate peaceful nature which
gave a feeling of the liberated mind = could be perfectly the life and the mind of a Buddhist)
—– it has been left out of strict argument.
Non
But in strict term, the Mushin is the state of the mind, which only occurs when our
brain ceased to operate to categorising and reconfiguring the notion. —– yet
able to react to incoming stimulant.
—– In practice, this state of mind can be reached only through the long long repeated
practice which wear out those active, intentional activities of the brain
= thinking process.
And very similar to the treatment of an allergy, those practice also wear out the basic
desire and the emotional reaction = So that, the state of the Mind [ Mind of No-Mind]
= [Mushin] is only strict to [Purely the state of No-Thinking and No-Emotion]
= Dispassionate.
(but not akin to senseless or thoughtless —– because in those cases, senseless / thoughtless
mind is, in fact occupied by another sorts of mind = such as an anger, greed or
overwhelming fanaticism = ideology or madness)
non
=== this definition must have cleared the confusion.
=== the mind of childish, senseless, thoughtless Rioters were definitely, utterly
no way near to the Buddhist’s Mushin.
[ If it was done in Mushin, it got to bring the GOOD outcome. This is what the
Karma mean. And if it brought bad outcome — because, it has done not in Mushin]
—– You may say this is out of rational logic and say ” Why”, but this is what I found and true.
And this must be the reason why the Buddhism is existing. 🙂

Clockwork DHARMA ?
I just found a good metaphor to explain [What is Dharma] !
It’s a huge gigantic machine ! (No, this is no a joke 😀 )
Gigantic, as its mechanism extend as far as to the end of universe.
And as it is working and ticking, it’s keep moving, hence, no same moment ever exists.
But this machine is invisible, except some end-device connected to its mechanism.
Its mean, all the visible existences are the part of this machine.
This machine exists since the start of the universe, long before human kind appeared on the earth.
Therefore, no written specification, operational manual in any language exists, yet still, some part of its
mechanism and the function has been observed and deciphered as a science and chemistry.
As it is a viable working machine, there is certain tendency and the rules of the way how it works,
though, as it is so gigantic and too complicated, it is beyond the capability of the human to know whole function.
—– except Buddha.
Non
While observing the phenomena and its occurrences, Buddha noticed that, this world is a kind of system
which is affecting and reacting to each other. ( This intertwined connection is the Karma )
He found it as the system of infinite size which contains ourselves as a part.
And as it is constantly adjusting and reacting, there can not be a single moment of stillness
—– nothing stays the same.
And as it is a system automatically working like a machine, it doesn’t have human like Ego or its own SELF
—– and the human is its part of mechanism, human has SELF neither.
And this system exists before human and not designed to serve for human, its operation is not necessary
for the benefit of human, therefore to live as a part of this system, occurrences are not centred for human
nor kind to human. —– Hence life is harsh.
—– with those contemplation, Buddha found the wisdom to deal with this system or to live as a
part of the system with minimum aggravation, hence in peace and the harmony.
And the teaching is —– to know how the mechanism of the system and the mechanism of ourself works.
Only the way to find the function and its internal rules of the unknown mechanism is —– to observe
and find it by oneself.—– (Finding it, is the Enlightenment)
As the system is working automatic, disregarding the human ego or emotion, to impose or try to understand it,
with human-like mind is pointless —– because the system itself has no such mind.
( You can’t deal with machine with your emotion — you have to do it like handling a machine 😀 )
As the system (include ourself) is operating without the mind, try to think or explaining it with words is
useless. It needs to observe its function and the results = deeds. Hence, talking, thinking has no place.
—– This is what the Dharma is.
non
You may not like this description 😀
Especially the western people got used to think the God as a personified figure, as it was imagined as a
super-human, though, no such things in the Universe.
Nor so-called great soul, like Brahman or Atman. ( Romanticized idea appeals to the emotion, but
romantic idea is far from the Truth )
The Dharma is the system much more like a huge machine.
That’s why it is operating dispassionately / in Mushin ( Mind of no-mind).
( Financial panic may caused by the fear of speculators which some Buddhist may say “It’s only in the mind”
though, resulting rise of interest will affect all others like a mechanical precision and the force)
In fact, human mind is always causing a destruction and a mayhem to the system.
—– that’s why the Buddhism says Mushin, Taoism says Woii —– do nothing intentionally = let the natural
mechanism to take its own course.
( I found this metaphor is the clearest explanation —– in words 😀 —— Convinced ? )

I don’t know how many people contributed to each Joke and when its became a crèche.
Obviously they were said by the westerner as the list has more of the Christian sect, in comparison
to such as Buddhism, Moslem or even Judaism. ( Buddhism might have more than 50 sects and
Sunni and Shiite Moslem seemed to be quite different, and from moderate to ultra-orthodox, the
Judaism sects might not having the same view —– When it came to the Matter of Shit 😀
non
They are the caricature based on the stereotype —– though, don’t be serious its a joke.
Yet still, to make a caricature funny, it need to have certain resemblance —– That’s why its Joke
makes people realize “ M, m, m, its true 😀 “ —– so, I would say, “ Well said !”
non
Something related to this blog is, there are two entry of the Buddhism.
Buddhism general and the Zen Buddhism. —– m, m, m, interesting.
But, the one quoted What is the sound of shit happening? seemed to be a caricature of KOAN,
it’s mean Rinzai Zen sect. ( Soto-Zen doesn’t use the words )
—– If I were there to answer this Koan, I would say
“ It deafening the nose “ 😀

Pok’s ZEN
Ten days ago I received an invitation to a private view of an art exhibition from a man whom I don’t know at all.
I was quite puzzled, how come ? ? ? (since my Email address is not public)
Exhibition was a contemporary art in context of dairy practice in Zen Buddhist’s culture —- What ?
Before go down to the puzzle of Zen art, I guessed that somebody my friend who knows of my Zen blog
might have suggested him to send an Email to me.
Any how, it’s best to see a man and ask.
Non
So, I took a journey to the exhibition and met a young artist, Chong-Boon Pok.
Obviously he is a Chinese but turned out to be from Malaysia and living in here about 10 years.
And he is a kind of [native] Zen Buddhist, who doesn’t need to know what the Zen is or its
history etc, but as he was grown up in its environment he is naturally doing it.
(even unaware of why —– it’s in his subconscious)
—– As he was saying in his Press release;
“ My studio practice operates within subjects, time and space using the everyday and engages
aspects of mindfulness, self, memories, social, cultural and symbolic form. My cultural upbringing and
life experiences are often revisited, examined and evidenced in my work.
The work embraces ideas of as-it-is-ness, nothingness, the impermanent nature of things, and the
interconnectedness of objects and people, all of which are relevant to Zen Buddhist discourses of everyday.”
non
And what he is showing are — in his words;
“ Devoting attentiveness to and contemplating the everyday is central to my art practice.
The everyday that I refer to is the trivial, ordinary and inconsequential objects and activities that
people tend to take for granted such as the cutlery we use for eating, something we are so familiar
with that we are less likely to give a second thought when we encountered them. Besides
assembling everyday objects into sculptural forms and installations, part of my work involves
using food and cooking to perform and interact with people visiting my exhibition.”
non
Like a round piece in the photo above ( can be enlarged with click on the photo) it was made out of
drink-can’s pull-ring —– thousand of them. So as the other pieces, they are made out of really
ordinary objects —– but with the thousands of repeated works.
Some may think, it might have done by dreadful swet-shop like endless work or even it might have done by
the hired worker —– wrong. It was all done by the artist himself.
And some may think, it is a kind of play devoting to the God —– wrong again.
Except the first few line of the work where the artist needed to find the best adjustment, following work
all through up to the finishing line, it was done almost automatic = just the repeating movement of the fingers.
There was nothing else in his mind = so-called Mindfulness, though, in fact, there was nothing.
Hence Mind of No-Mind = the true reflection of the Nothingness of the existence.
—– in deed, those repeating work is the Buddhist’s practice = by which the one can reach to
the state of Mushin (Mind of No-Mind ).
non
But we shouldn’t forget, that the Practice is just the practice to get the state of the mind, Mushin.
Mushin itself is not a goal. It is just a state of the mind. What is the goal ? —– Life, that’s all.
But the Life without unnecessary worries or useless delusions hence without pitfall.
What else anyone needs to have ?
More than handful of gold ? Or surrounded by 100 of virgins ? —— ? ? ? What to do with those virgins ?
Do you want to be a rapist or dirty old man ? —– in fact, all those dirty idea negates the goodness or virtue of
the Mushine, since it against the Rules of the Dharma.
One’s life is to make other life happier. This is what all about the meaning of the Life.
( Running big company employing thousands of staffs and selling the products all over the world
—– in effects, supporting those who working for him, and appreciated by the people who bought the products,
in the same time, making money and able to supports his own family —– this is the Life.
(well, billions of variations there)
non
So, unmistakably, the artist, Pok succeeded in this task —– by his work in Mushin, made
the people smile and made their eyes open “ A, Ha ~ ~ ~” and making people feel Happy.
He should be rewarded by the Dharma.

TOY and ELECTRONICS
A while ago I was introduced to a guy who needs to have some helps for his electronic project.
This guy Richard has been running his shop-sign design business near the work shop of the
Open Wifi Networking people / OWN, and he was introduced me through this group.
As he wanted to expand his design to LED light sign-board, but without having enough knowledges of
electronics. ( —– good boy. I like this kind of people. Keen to study and challenge new field.)
(Any how, I myself started a hobby of electronics from scratch
without having any formal education or training)
He had started to make sign-board using a kit bought from China —– and having mountain of
problems, the power supply, heat-up, etc etc. (May be it worked in China though, this country got
much more strict Safety regulation and the customers are more fussy, and so on)
Basically, the Chinese design was rather cleverly simplified, using less components —– would work
just within the limit and under an ideal condition.
Though, the trouble of bespoke designs are, they are not always the same design, and the number
of LEDs on the board are not necessary the same number.
So, I suggested the modification and the change of the components, power supply etc etc, in fact
quite a lots of works needed to make them perfect 🙂
non
On the beginning, he tried to pay for my help. I told him “My help is free. And even if he want to pay,
he can’t afford my formal charge” “One day, if I need, I may need to ask your help”
“So, just glad to receive a help from others, and give a help when he saw if others needed”
non
——- Then, he found the Chinese toys using LEDs and showed me if they can be used to control the
electronic signal in the sign-board.
Modification or adaptation of electronic circuit is much easier than to make a tandem bicycle out of
two broken bicycles (which needs to have a lots of cutting and welding —– a messy business)
As a matter of fact, I’ve been doing many of those kind of adaptation.
A video clip of my rotating LED disco costume in Youtube was made out of a Chinese toy too.
When I saw the complicated lighting pattern of 5 LEDs in the small toy, I’ve got the idea to utilize it
(then, I made more than 10 design and the prototypes —– and one end-up as a fancy disco gadget 😀 )
If I design and make the same from scratch, by using gate ICs or a micro-controller IC, it would become
quite a size and impossible to rotates, let alone to mount it on a disco costume.
Since Chinese manufacturer designed and made it as a cheap toy, expecting to sell millions, they made
all the controlling circuit and the memory in one custom IC, everything is in a thumb nail sized board
—– so that, I’ve bought 20 of them 50 pence each 🙂 —– what a bargain 😀
Most of those ICs in the toys which execute a pre-programmed
routine is having a digital memory and its execution speed is
clocked by an internal RC clock, and its frequency is
supply voltage dependent, its mean if we change it, it could
slow down the speed.
The toys, Richard found was rapidly flashing RGB LEDs disco
pendant kind. Those electronic circuit can be modified to flash
the letters on a sign-board by adding higher current transistor,
and can have more effective speed or giving more interesting
random movement as well.
And by using much higher supply voltage, it can light up lot more number of LEDs —– the variations are
endless —– after all, they are so cheap, try this and that —– any faliuer wouldn’t cost you much.
Try to analyse and modify the circuit is a kind of game and a fun. —– and I made user friendly, ready to
use small board for him (and his assistants) to make sign-board.
—– rest of work is for him / he is the designer. I was just an adviser.
It was an interesting occasion to see a person rapidly learning and succeeding.
This is the Zen at work. (for me and for him)
Let the things to come and happen.—– In Buddhist’s view, it is not an accident.
It’s happened as it should be.
Be flexible in the brain / in the way of thinking, and to the occurence in the life,
and above all, just do what required there in its best.
Hence, I was happy and he was happy too.
The day and the life in total would be quite fruits-full. ( with a lots of fun as well 🙂 )
