Twisted Lens

Lens in the optical devices must be placed exactly parallel and

having its axis in the dead center. —– That was what I thought.

But the photo above may demonstrate otherwise.

It was taken by the casually improvised 2 convex lens = one was

the rear element of Canon EF Zoom 28~70 and the other —–

thin convex lens from  somewhere.  And those lenses were

temporally stacked on front of bellows on DSLR body.  I expected

to see rather blurred poor image though, much of my surprise,

even annoyance, that lens produced pretty decent image.

= They were 2 convex lenses = even not an achromatic

convex-concave structure, still shows no chromatic aberration.

It’s not fare !  Why cheap junk couldn’t produce junk image ?

So, I mounted those two lenses in angle = say one lens got

its top downward and the other was its bottom upward.

Front lens was off the axis 15° and the other (inside) was 10°.

Though, the image was NOT destroyed. (Like a photo above)

The image here was almost intentionally created blurred

image made by the Twisted lens mounted on a bellows.

The photo here gave rather requisite over soft image.  😀

Center photo shows how the Lens were mounted.

Now you must be convinced that the myth of precise

engineering of optics may not necessary be true.  

(That’s the reason how manufacturer produce flimsy

plastic zoom lens without showing any hesitation.)

 

PS :     Later, I noticed that the rear element of

Canon Zoom showed 3 internal reflection and

a Newton-ring = they are the indication of that

the optics was the 2 element construction =

convex and concave lenses stacked together =

achromatic design.

(= that’s why the images had no chromatic aberration)

Google Horror (2)

Every week, Youtube is sending me the list of new viz.  

And what I received for 1^st of May was REALLY interesting

and you should see them too.

(Note, Youtube is a part of Google)

Have look the screen capture here, and see what was

there on the bottom = “Recommended” = One left was

apparently the most dreadful kind of Porn viz,

“Copulation of a Girl and a Dog” and the one right

could be a Child Porn. Since I haven’t click them,

I don’t know what they are exactly.

And as my Broadband provider set a restriction for

adult contents, I don’t know what they are.

(To make a restriction lifted, it is necessary to

register with full name, DOB, Driving License Number

— though, I’m not such keen to give my ID for a sake

of somebody else’s sex viz at all — anyway,

I haven’t touch a woman since 1987.   😀 )

Here the most astonishing fact was, “Did Youtube allow

to show those, the most degrading dreadful kind of Porn”

— does Google got any sense of “What is normal or right

or wrong”? — does Google think those kind of things ARE

worth recommending,— in other words, in Google’s

standard, those Porn are morally acceptable and

worth recommend to others ?

— And why they recommended those to me ? ? ?  

What sort of imagination or idea made this

“Recommendation”—– Only a possibility I can think

of is, this must be a dirty conspiracy = a Trap against me

since I put an exposing blog accusing

Google Android dirty Apps.

= If I open those Porn, they record it as an evidence.

Or they could put those Porn Image/ File into my PC

—– then a Policeman knock the door.  

Or, is it the intimidation while implying “What would

happen next”. How do you think ?    

Did Google acquire filthy mind as dirty as “Animal F***” kind ?  

Or was that their default = hence they deluded others

must have the same taste and anxious to know

other’s privacy ! —– Here, the serious question IS,

Greedy and Filthy minded Google still expecting to receive

ANY respect from the society ? ? ?

— And the last question is, are they, actuary a person in

charge with, doing this ? — or automatic AI program is doing ?

= If it was done by AI, to develop a graphic pattern recognition

program to distinguish “Animal F***” and send it to me must

have a lots of work needed !

( Hasn’t Google got ANY better things to DO. ? ? ? )

Google Horror

I’ve been using Android Tab let as a mobile photo book

to show others the photos of this blog, such as

” Modify the lens. and its Optical effect” which is easy

to show but almost impossible to verbally explain.

— With security precaution, I registered my device in

different name and to have different Mail address. 

With obvious false name, no hacking, no virus ever come

here, neither Google/Android gave a sit =  no possibility

to make money out of this address = hence it’s been quiet

untill few days ago, when I  needed to read my mail out

 London, using my tablet.

= suddenly the usage rocketed up.

Frantic activity toward my Email

account, address list etc etc.

Those so-called APP is not what

I wanted, neither installed by me.

Still, Google says “You agree to

our policy” though, what they 

says the policy is nothing but an

outrageous extortion.

We might have compromised to see

some AD on the side, but never agree to

give a permission to spy all the mail, and all of our

movement. — (You know, your secret naughty USB

dongle would no longer be secret = could even be

reported to the Police.  Be careful !)

You can see what they says –> go to Settings –> then to Apps

Horrifying isn’t it !   Are they insane ?  Ever had common

sense ?  — I try to uninstall the App, deactivate, and

empty the data without success — while I was working,

instead to succeed removing those Spyware, the address list

“Contact” was disappeared !  = (Tit for tat)

Very  very  Funny.  😀

Google has been making a friendly face and try to appeal with some

amazing invention etc —– though, that IS their cover-up mask.

 And those Apps are their real intention.    Using their internet

 dominance which can reach any corner and the well-developed

AI system to aautomatically read (even read the image) and spy

= they are going deeper into our private life,— for making

more profit !    But they’ve gone too far !

— A remedy or a measure against such situation is = Instead

of Android, use Linux, or to have a small MS device registered

with funny or useless name and use it to connect to the Net = 

It would be enough for mailing, watching YouTube, small

download.  Use other PC which is not connected to the Net, for

heavy work (design, compiling, analysing etc) in business,

Industrial use.   Address list shouldn’t be kept in that satellite

device = type one by one each time = it would be a life in the

stone-age though this IS the safer way to keep one’s life

in peace.  (I don’t think I’m a paranoid —– I just don’t

like a big cooperates arrogance)

Then the real horror started = As those APPs automatically

checking the activity, mail contents etc, etc, and keep

updating, the data traffic become enormous.  

Past 4~5 years, my use of Net (read news, mail and blog)

needed only up to 3Gb/month but with Android APPs,

the data traffic swelled to 3~4 times. = This is yet another

Extortion / Highway Robbery isn’t it ? !

***** A remedy / evading action I found was, 

1) Re-start (Format) the Device by Pressing start button

over a Minuit.  Then pretend to start as normal =

2) While ignoring “Their request to Authenticate“, 

3) Press “All menu button (6 Dots in a circle)

4) and go to where ever you want to do = such as

Google Search of the Blog and read it 0r take

pictures etc etc.

5) Where ever, when ever they ask you to Register,

Give your profile = Just IGNORE all of them.

(In the settings, USER = leave the user as Owner,

don’t touch it.  (Without Register,  or ignoring what

ever they asked, the Device works perfect !)

6) Biggest disadvantage was= can’t use Email other

than use in a false new account.

— With those operations, the Device was regarded

as an orphan and become out of their target =

NO download of their App hence no update =

the usage become purely what was used.

Wish Better or the Best

Somebody commented “Where the urge to make it better comes from ?”

—– as a reply I wrote “Even a monkey chose a good stone to crack a

hard shell = good choice or not, makes the difference = able to eat or not.

In the worst case, it may cause an injury to the fingers.

It’s mean, it is a key to the own survival= survival instinct.” — yet still,even

if it wasn’t such serious but rather playful situation, we try to do the better.

Just through something, stone, trash — we aim, to a target, bin etc.

—– Why ? —– To satisfy the Ego in a challenge ?  “Hey look I succeeded” or

“I’m better than you” — Was it ?     Not necessary in a serious situation, no

other person around, even trivial small things, such as just put few items

together,  we try to put them tidier way or make the shape easier to handle.

(Then, the personality exposed = somebody pay more attention and make

the things / situations better.    Otherwise, others creates even more havoc !)

If it was an instinct to avoid a pain and to chose the way which needs a least

effort, was based on the learning, why some of us never learn ?  = In the net,

there are endless number of silly stories still, they were produced with the

effort to get an impact and the maximum number of view. 

Have a good fun seems yet another instinct.

After the accumulation of the learning, we human being made up the map

of which can tell General List of Goodies.  Then those would be told by the

old man or wise man as the common sense, moral or social rules still, they

were originated from the human instinct.  Therefore,  the eyes of

Lord Buddha, they were seen as the expression of the Dharma.  And as we

have it in our instinct, it was explained that we were born with the Dharma.

And the Zen is the practice to make it better with thousands times practice.

(If not million times) —– and to learn its mind-set.

So, Zen could (possibly) make a better person (in theory)  😀

I wouldn’t guaranty the better person still, the product produced by the

craftsman with such Zen mind, has been so good, such as the Japanese

cooking knife has become a must have item to the top chef of the world.

Meaning on the Hand

Well, this is the Post diverted and became its own from the previous post.

Hand is a body parts which got second highest concentration of

the nerve after the eyes.  And especially we human got our hands

best developed among any animals, we have best and the most

delicate control of them.    So that, not only its dexterity or the

physical function, its acquired the mean of expression as well. 

We can read the meaning of what the hand is telling or symbolizes,

and the eyes tend to follow what the hand is expressing.  

(I mean not only F**K or Peace kind of sign but also more delicate

mood of its operator as well.)  🙂

Among the Buddhism, Tantra sect having not only their Dharani

(magic words) but also quite complicated form of the hand sign

(or finger twists which the followers do the same — and they are

showing off it each others “Look I can do better than you”).

It’s hard to guess where it was originated, = each

Buddhism Figures are showing their unique hand sign.

You may search their meanings or each name in the Wiki  though,

I don’t think it would bring any worthwhile understanding of the

Buddha’s teachings.   They are just the cosmetic style.

= After all, the core of the teachings was, to reprogram the brain to

jump the process in the Emotional Region in Limbic System, where

the notion of Self-interests = Ego / Greed / Desire  were induced.

It is the same situation to learn ride a Bicycle = reprogram the Motor

Region of brain to learn the body-balance on the bicycle = intellectual

understanding of “How to ride” wouldn’t work, but physical practice.

Lord Buddha’s last words in his death bed to the disciples was

“Don’t believe what others say or you head, but learn it yourself”

—– This episode signify

(1) His teaching could not be understood intellectually but only 

a practical learning of the body and the mind could materialize.

Such as,  you been reading this blog without noticing WHO is

reading this — ?   = We are living without noticing the SELF.

Unless we assert “Me Me Me” Self is not there.

— With a practice, you will get a technique to apply this mental

mechanism to do the subject which was awkwardly entwined with

your Ego, without Emotion and without the so-called Self.

(2) The reason why

Lord Buddha had to say it in such a precious, last remaining

moment was that his disciples has yet necessarily mastered it.

—– And this fact explain why the Buddhism and its teachings of

“No-Self /Anatman” (No soul to Reincarnates) was misconceived

and mixed up with the Hinduism (which says Reincarnation) since

such early days.

When we saw a hand and feel what sort of meaning it’s saying,

— we can feel but it can not be interpreted into the words.  

Our hand express unconsciously = and we read it unconsciously.

= they are out of the lexical comprehension.   —– The most of

Lord Buddha’s statue having the hand sign called “Semui” (in

Japanese) which said to mean “Don’t be afraid” — Can you see it ?

I can only see “Oh, what a big hand !” —– 😀 

—– You have to see it by your eyes.  Not from the stories.

Otherwise, Why You need to bother be a Buddhist.

To contact with all the fresh stimuli with your naked sense will

keep your brain young.   🙂

Ai Weiwei Exhibition

Actuary, I went to the Fortnum & Mason again with different

lens (or hole ?) — Then, I just crossed the street to other side,

to the Royal Academy = where happen to have an exhibition

of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

Academy’s courtyard having trees or re-assembled dead wood.

It was an utterly odd view.  Those trees were not in the original

shape nor well composed big “Ikebana” but the standing mess.

I wondered what’s going on the inside.

(Photo above = tons of building steel rod were piled up on the floor

=Ai Weiwei is not good to make the things by himself but to

organize the  workers to do the job.)

I’m not a fun of Ai Weiwei. 

I can see he is trying hard to MAKE something “looks like an ART”.

= in other words, he was not a born artist = so that, to squeeze the

brain to manufacture the piece, not spontaneously creates a shape.

Hence, the piece wouldn’t hit our emotion but just boggle the mind. 

= So, the art critics needs to write about those “Boggle” = keeping

them busy and the art-media flourish. — The good art will hit the

viewer’s subconscious direct = no need of explanation nor critics’

blah blah.  😀

So, those were the pieces made out of the pretext of the earthquake

= the list of the dead (Left) and the debris (right).

— did such big disaster inspire him only those ?   If I were him, I

would have put a school text book or a bunch of hair between the

debris = bad taste but such straight visual signal will hit the

subconscious of the viewers direct, without needs of blah blah.

a chair used to be a tree. = So what ?

And the photo right = nicely made cabinet having holes =

spoiling the effort and saying a twist = again So, what =

What a cheap idea.  Can’t you conceive anything better ?

Yet again like the words of a second class art school

teacher = “Make a thing out of norm/Break a stereotype”.

TV camera (or that kind of shape) was made by plastic.

Chinese has been making so many utterly inconceivable

products such as fake eggs, fake protein (melamine) in

the milk etc etc = Ai Weiwei should learn from them if he

want to impress us with the eye-opening incredible idea !

Something scribble ? — or repeated print covering whole wall.

He might have thought = highly technical idea — a piece using

the reflection of acril plastic. = Yes I can see its funny reflection.

So, what ?   A bit strange doesn’t mean “Impressive”  🙂

Everyday’s  objects made out expensive jade.

Handcuffs made out of plastic. Useless and out of norm again.

(Chinese kid’s toy Handcuffs were all made by plastic ) ?

Fabricated trees in the room — not impressive though, they 

still showed a kind of fun-full free structure he must have

enjoyed like a game.  So, I liked this piece.

Thousands white plastic pieces covering the floor and one

baby buggy  (= somewhat impressive fine work)

— is this related to the Chinese Scandal / billion of forcibly

aborted fetus by the “one child policy” ?  (I only guess =

I didn’t get any information or bought an exhibition catalog.

= In my policy, I SEE the piece, not study it by the words.)

In this room, and the confined small box explaining what

Ai Weiwei himself has been subjected by the So-Called

Authority’s tenacious interrogation = kind of torture/

intimidation/suppression.

This is not an art but just an indictment.= may have a

political meaning still, visually boring exhibit. Not impressed.

So far, this must be the most impressive piece in this exhibition.

May be it was just a coincidence = still, how bizarre.

On this occasion, I had only Concentric-Double-Dencity Pinhole

intended to use for F&M Window shooting, which was not best

suits for this  subject still, I think it wasn’t too bad.

On this Planet

Time to time, I fond the very rare access to this blog, such as from

the Palestinian Territories or Bhutan.    And learned, such as

Faroe Island who supposed be a part of Denmark was treated

as an independent country and has their own flag.

Of course, these days, even middle of desert such as in Mongolia,

the locals has electric generator and watching satellite TVs so,

nothing strange to have a computer connected to the Net

—– and stumbled my blog  🙂   (Where ever on this planet, be ever

so remote, still someone stumbled and read this blog is nothing but

a manifestation of the Karmic power.)

Mankind is an incredibly resourceful animals.  Longtime ago,

I heard from Afghan, in order to connect satellite mobile phone,

they improvised to use chicken-net to make a satellite dish.

And I heard that in Cuba, where under the trade sanction,

everything has to be homemade or improvised = engine-oil

was made by a washing-up liquid mixed with sugar !

Nothing like their creativity, still, I had to improvised a bit to take

a photo above. = Long list of the countries.

On the beginning, I tried to collage scrolled 2 images though, it 

wasn’t looks good. — So, I setup the screen upright and showed

whole list in one screen and took the very photo.

(the reason why I’m writing such trivial story was, “It’s so funny

— and difficult — to use a screen upright”)

= It’s better you try it by yourself. —> Go to Control Panel —>

Adjust Screen Resolution. (in there, you’ll see “Screen set-up

= Landscape : Portrait”  Then click Portrait. = So, the image flicks.

But, when you try to use mouse or touch pad, you’ll see the hell.

(It may not happen, if the device was touch-screen type).

After having had a fun, Go to the Control panel and click back.

= everything back to the normal !  (You feel sigh !)  😀

(I couldn’t imagine that the Microsoft still having such incredible

shoddiness in their program === It was a DISCOVERY !)

Giffgaff and the TESCO’s Fraud

To connect my Google Tablet to the Net, I’ve been using Giffgaff SIM card 

more than a year.    It was recommended by the wireless expert.  

On the beginning, its unlimited Internet connection for £12 per month

seemed good deal and worked well. (= They needed to cut into market)

(Note: They changed the tariff, Unlimited Connection to 3GB without notice)

Then early this year, when they started to talk about 4G, and up-grade etc,

the connection was getting bad. = I could see it was a sales ploy to

pressurize the user to feel needs of better connection.

And the situation was getting bad to worse, hence more than half of the

occasion, when I wanted to show my blog etc to others,  NO CONNECTION.

 Even in the middle of the night, connection couldn’t be made at all.

= Who can trust such company and pay even more money for an up-grade.

It is the time to look for

somewhere else.

The shop staffs selling Elecs’

secondhand, who is the most

knowledgeable people in this

kind of up-to-date information.   They recommended me Tesco SIM card.

The trouble was, it was not available in the ordinary Tesco shops.  I had to

Ask around three shops, and I took a journey to the largest one in the area.

—–  While testing 2 weeks so far, it made only 2 occasions hard to connect.

(At moment, it is only 1GB  £10  One month try,  though, seems not too bad.)

Funny things was, both Giffgaff and Tesco are using the same O2 net-work

which IS giving 4G service —– but Giffgaff is making such difference !

(Provider is adjusting the Bandwidth intentionally for their purpose)  😀

And what I found was even

more disturbing !

—– Did you noticed ?

Now £12 for only 2GB. (saying

with 4G) Though, O2 IS 4G. 

So, Tesco use 4G from the start.

(But Giffgaff was intentionally

 making it to 3G speed !)

Get rid of the Giffgaff SIM and changed to TESCO SIM —– looked 

like a good choice though, suddenly the hell opened.

The use of Tesco SIM on my tablet was on a probation period.

= To test how Tesco works as a provider and its O2 connection.

But, the observation was abruptly halted. = suddenly, the usage

said to have reached to the 1GB upper limit. And the Net was cut-off,

the screen started to say “TOP UP”  —– The usage graph showed

incredibly unnatural rise seemingly caused by “TuneIn Radio”

(photo above left)  which said to have consumed whopping 0.67GB

within few days.   But funny fact was, this App was not active = as

the screen shows ” App isn’t installed”. (photo middle) = This is

the “Caught in Red-handed” case of the TESCO’s fraud. —– Is there

any possibility of the Radio was accidentally activated and off again ? 

And can the radio kept making the noise in full volume for few days

without me noticing it ?     Especially when  2 years old battery is its

end of the life so that, never able to leave the tablet left switched ON.

—– (Now I got new battery

for my Nexus 7 — BUT, it

found to be a scavenged

secondhand.

We should be careful with so-called “UK-Seller” in Ebay)

Above all,  when I’m testing it for a month within 1GB limit — who leave 

the radio kept switched on ?   ( Even if the App was working — but not)

( I use a lap-top with proper keyboard with land-line broadband to deal 

with Net, Blog, Youtube etc, so that the tablet was just for fun when I go out.

In other words, I don’t need to use the tablet in my home = why do I ?)

= Obviously, it was the TESCO, who has tampered the counter.

( Who else can access the counter without making the radio noise.   🙂 )

—– (and it was for the sake of few pounds — can you believe ? ! ! ! )

(May be few pound from me though, in the systematic massive scale operation,

the total gain would be huge = in other words, they must be doing it systematic.)

As a matter of fact, every Broadband provider did the same, but they

didn’t leave the evidence behind, unlike the TESCO did for this time.  

Yet still, I’m not sure, whether this is a case for Ofcom or

Consumer’s Association or even Police.

—— As I took the tablet to the TESCO Mobile Shop where I’ve bought

their SIM  3 weeks ago and complained while showing the evidences,

a man in the HQ offered me free 500MB compensation.

= So, they are well aware what they are doing.

After those findings / Experiences, when I wanted to terminate the

contract with Tesco Mobile, the real hell was opened.    The Shop who sold

the SIM said, that they can’t terminate the contract, it has to be done through

the Telephone 0345-301-4455 which never work.  And the Email kept saying

“No log-in” —– So, the only a possibility to contact / complain them was by

way of the writing.  —– It IS really funny, to get out from the 1 month Only

contract seemed such trouble. = The best way is NEVER start deal with Tesco.

Dust, Water seal ? — on Canon 5D

As I’ve disassembled and checked the inside of several Canon 5D cameras, I noticed

some peculiar points, the way how those cameras were designed and made. 

There was an almost legendary story, how Canon camera was survived when all

the Nikons has stopped to work under the sand storm in the first Gulf War which

made the press photographers to change their camera like an avalanche.

I heard a first hand witness story from a photographer who was one of my pupil

(who became a staff photographer of Reuters and went to the desert.) — What he

told me was that many other photographer’s Nikon were breaking-down while the

Canon kept working~~~ (in fact, before his camera break, he part-exchanged his to 

Canon. = so, I didn’t actually see how Nikon machine was clogged.) — Since this 

event, camera makers are keen to appeal “the Seal against the Dust and the water”

in their camera design. = So as the 5Ds are no exception = claim to have the Seal.

THOUGH, when I opened their body, I saw very little such measure.

= this photo was a 5D Mk-III inside, as you can see, there was no seal or gasket kind

of material on their jointing edge.  = It’s mean, once the body was dropped in the water

the camera has no resistance to it.  — May be what Canon was saying was, “In the

normal situation”, such as a light rain splash = not soaked into the water which IS

regarded as the user’s fault.

If you closely look at the 5D body, such as the Battery cap. (Photo left)

You can see the gasket on its edge which might be giving you a sort of comfort.  

Though, it was just a show-off window display. = If you are serious, have look 

battery chamber of the memory retaining battery on the right-bottom of the body.

(right under the cable connectors = Photo center and right ) = situating the same

bottom of the camera, this opening has no protection against the water at all. =

When the camera was on the table and if the beer was spilt, it seep deep into the

camera body. —– Still, sound strange to you though, today’s DSLR camera is 

quite resilient to the water which is not because of the special design, but the 

nature of its electronic components. (but the image sensor get smear easily)  

Those components and the Circuit Flex are waterproof, which was designed to 

be washed by a solvent and the shutter switch has closed structure. (photo left)

Seemed to be the weakest-point against water is the Dial on the Grip (photo center)

= But the Dial was in a small chamber, separated from the electronic encoder

therefore the water wouldn’t go into the circuit easily (photo right).

You may not believe though, on my experience, I saved number of  TVs and

electronic goods, mobile phones, soaked under rain water, dropped into toilet,

and so-on, so that, they were even splash washed under the running water.

After completely drained the water, then dry it with hair-drier. (60 deg’ C Max)

(Don’t put the battery and switch-on before completely dry.)

= the most of the case, they recovered the function. = Same can apply to the  

DSLR.  (Hi-zoom compact camera may be much harder to save because the

mechanism is too small and compacted). — So, if you dropped your DSLR into

a water (cleaner the water, the better chance —– muddy water’s sand particle

reduce the chance) = grip the strap and swing, rotate the camera like a gyro 

in the air (if it was 5D camera, remove the memory battery to open the water 

escape.) = with a centrifugal force the water would be shaken off from inside.

(In an old day’s wisdom, put the wet camera into a pure alcohol = replace the

water by alcohol first —– a bottle of vodka may work as well)  🙂

Then try dry the camera as quick as possible. — place the camera in a box and

blow-in hot-air = otherwise a written-off camera could be saved or last few shots

of the assignment could still be taken.    (Though, if you couldn’t succeed, don’t

blame me = As I don’t presume any responsibility here.) Just Hope Good luck.    🙂

Can Zen change a person to Liberal

Very fundamental question — Can Zen Buddhism change a person to be more

open-minded liberal personality, or a person who IS open-minded, come to Zen ?

= in other words, that person has been born to be a liberal by own Karma already.

Zen or Das Kapital may have played little role to make one’s direction, only gave

an excuse and a cosmetic to the life.

— In my early post, I wrote, I came here by coincidence though, from the start,

I was born to be a son of Zen priest.   Like it or not, Zen family has the Zen principal

and such atmosphere anyway.   So, standing here as I am, was that because of

nurture or my nature IS questionable (pointless) question.

In scientific theory, decision making in the brain “which one to choose” or “do I take,

or not” was driven by the the Dopamine reward system = choose correct direction

would be rewarded by the seclusion of the Dopamine = so, feel satisfied and happy.

—– But, this selection, “Which choice would be rewarded” was not necessary

rationally decided by the data book’s logic.  

We might thought, such as the choice to be a Liberal or Conservative kind is highly

intellectually complex matter therefore it must be concluded by the big data-book

(thus lots of experiences and the learning required = So that, a long practice of Zen

would affect) —– though, contrary to this, a Gene affecting the person to be Liberal or

Conservative as one’s nature, seemed to be found. (was what they says — can be true !)

Can genes make us liberal or conservative?

Aristotle may have been more on the money than he realised in saying man is a political animal,

according to research linking genes with liberal or conservative leanings.
Or, to be precise, a specific variant of one gene that would seem to exert greater sway over women

than men.   Working with 1,771 university students of Han Chinese origin in Singapore, researchers

compared answers to surveys — including one tailored to hot-button issues in the city-state — with

the presence of a permutation of the DRD4 gene.
DRD4 is one of several genes that determines the way dopamine — a crucial neurotransmitter, or

chemical messenger — is released in the brain.
What they found was a robust link between the presence (or not) of the variant and a split between

liberals inclined to decry inequality, on the one hand, and die-hard conservative wary of change,

on the other.
The association between political attitude and DRD4 was highly significant for females, and less so

for men, said the study, led by Richard Ebstein of the National University of Singapore.
Women, it was also shown, tended to be more conservative in general.
The results are bolstered by earlier research based on people of European descent that found similar

patterns around the same gene, according to the study.
In the long-standing Nature vs. Nurture debate, it was long assumed that social values — and

especially political ones — were rooted in family upbringing, education and class.
But a growing body of evidence suggests, in the words of the researchers, that biology can’t be ignored.
A landmark study published in 1999, for example, of twins separated at or near birth showed a

marked strain of heritability for ‘conservatism’.
The brain is wired with several distinct dopamine pathways, including one related to the risk-taking

— arguably a parallel to the liberal-conservative dichotomy.
From an evolutionary standpoint, risk-taking is a complicated business: in some situations, it may

enhance one’s chances of success or survival, and in others it may spell doom.
In the study, the researchers used standard questionnaires to rate conservative or liberal tendencies,

making it easier to compare with earlier efforts to uncover links between genes and attitudes.
At the same time, to adjust for cultural variations from one country to another, they also devised a

survey based on local issues known to divide opinion in Singapore along political lines.
One set of questions, for example, asked the students — half men, half women with a mean age of 21

— to take positions on sensitive environmental and animal rights issues.
The correlation with the genetic variations was especially strong on these points.
Our results provide evidence, Ebstein and colleagues conclude, for a role of the DRD4 gene variants

in contributing to individual differences in political attitude, particularly in females.
