Pippin’s Art

Pippin(1)86-001

As I described in the other post,  South London Deptford is a peculiar town.

And an artist Steven Pippin must be the most well known (to the certain

people) peculiar resident there.   On the Deptford High Street,  his studio

or work-shop having a sign as an Optician.   (I haven’t ask him why though,

I guess, may be because he is dealing with “Optical things”  🙂 )

Pippin(2)A09A0606

So, in his “shop front” there are numerous “Kind of Camera” or “Used to be a

Camera” which are heavily modified or some might say “almost destroyed.”

Pippin(3)87-001

Whether his art lies in the resulting images created by those cameras or the

Camera itself is the Sculpture —– or the action to make those Cameras are

the conceptual art ? —– is a question but I couldn’t find an answer yet.

Pippin(4)A09A0601-001

Like a typical artist, he seemed to care little and just doing what he want to do.

(Right = Pippin.  Center = Julian,  and James —– we three were from the

Wireless Workshop in Greenwich)

Pippin(5)90-001

Often, his creation was more of the destruction — such as to make a camera

explode or shot with a gun.

Pippin(6)A09A0603

But his recent project  [ Ω = 1 ]  is a kind of autonomous  machine to keep a

pencil standing upright. = It’s a X-Y optical feed-back system, and he want to put

this machine installed on top of the tall tower. —– (on the end, he seemed to

persuade the people of the [Sky-tree (634 m tall)] in Tokyo to install this on top.)

(I guess, this optical feed-back system would  work only on the solid ground.

If the machine itself, with optical detector altogether moves (not just wobbling

pencil), its movement may go beyond the feed-back range, as the Sky-tree’s top

sways more than 5 meters, wen hit by an earthquake or strong wind ! )

—– incidentally, the link for the anti-shake structure of the Sky-tree Tower

[Shin-bashira] and  [Mitsubishi Counter-weight system].

By the way, the reason why Sky-tree was 634 m tall was because it’s in Tokyo where

used to be called the county of Musashi. (to pronounce  6=Mu, 3= San, 4=Shi) 😀

Pippin(7)88-001

Photo Left = Carl Zeiss’ folding camera “Zeiss Ikonta” was burnt to produce

the image of the  “End of the Camera”.   In his “Aladdin’s cave” it’s hard to

guess what there and what for or what would it become to.    🙂

Pippin(8)A09A0588

He got fully equipped work shop and all those tools are pretty familiar to me.

Pippin(9)A09A0610

Though, to the local folks, the world see through his window must be

the remotest world, let alone to understand the significance of the

[Half-cut Camera] !

Pippin(10)A09A0611-001

So, whether his studio is transparent or invisible to the people or not,

a gap on the street itself shows the mysterious zone in the human mind.

Small Repair (2)

My friend brought a broken external speaker to our Weekly Meeting

in Greenwich.  Its left channel was working but the condition was not stable.

—– When electronic device was unstable to a mechanical shock,  the cause

may be in a mechanical component such as switch, volume control

otherwise somewhere has a loose connection.

VR repair(1)83-001

With a detailed observation inside and the check of the resistance value,

the Volume Control (blue block)  found to be faulty.

—– So,  I removed it from the board and disassembled to see the inside.

On the middle of right photo, you can see the burnt-out volume structure.

VR repair(2)84-001

To check whether rest of the circuit is sound or not,  the best way is to put

fixed value resistor in place of Volume, in this case  20 kΩ  ganged volume was

replaced by 4 x 10 kΩ  resistors which gives a setting somewhere in the middle.

—– As I couldn’t find the identical replacement,  I put an equivalent

Ganged Volume ( they are for each Left and Right channel) instead.

The repair has done and it worked perfect.   (don’t complain poor look and some

inconveniences = repair was for the function.  As long as the sound is OK, it’s OK

—– to enjoy the quality of sound, out of Philips Amp and the Speaker, while pay

nothing — don’t ask too much.  😀 )

( After all, repair was also free  =  neither me paying any tuition fee, still I learned

quite amazing idea of Philips’ audio design  = What a fun ! )

Mono Hole – DD Pinhole Comparison

Mono-DDP Test(1)A09A0269

Another day, I demonstrated the effects of the Pinhole to a sceptic in a Park.

So, the Photo above is the reference shot by a Fish-eye lens.

Mono-DDP Test(2)78-001

Photo above are the images made by [Wide-angle Mono Pinhole] (Left)

and the Pinhole alone (= Wide-angle lens was removed) (Right)

Mono-DDP Test(3)79-001

And here, the Photos were made by [Concentric Double-density Pinhole]

with Wide-angle lens attached (Left) and without (Right)

Mono-DDP Test(4)A09A0478

A Fish-eye image of  “Pink Forget-me-not” (I think) — note,

even Fish-eye lens has limited depth of field.

Mono-DDP Test(5)80-001

Left was [Wide-angle Mono (single) Pinhole] (Orange cast was caused

by a light-leak.)  Right was [Wide-angle DD-Pinhole]

Mono-DDP Test(6)81-001

Left = Wide-angle Mono-Pinhole.  Right = Pinhole alone and close to the flowers.

(Remember, Pinhole has no focus —– even no view-finder image = too dark.

Therefore all those photos were the blind-shots)

Mono-DDP Test(7)82-001

Left = Wide-angle DD-Pinhole.

Right = Pinhole alone and close to the flowers. (The line in the left side

was caused by an internal reflection.)

[]

At least, my friend was convinced that the effect was not by a digital

manipulation though still sceptic about the significance of the image.

That’s a matter of the taste Sir.  😀

Impressionists Flower Photo — like oil paintings/DD Pinhole Images

New-DD Pinhole Flower(1)A09A0013

These are the Photos of  [Wide-angle Double-density Pinhole]  😀

New-DD Pinhole Flower(2)63-001

Just a pretty pretty sweet pictures.  Nothing else. (Don’t ask too much.)

New-DD Pinhole Flower(3)64-001

Now a day, sharp pan-focused images are everywhere,  especially “Phone-Camera”

become even more popular. (The smaller the camera, image become more

Pan-Focused)  —– Though, our eyes are not Pan-Focus = Brain only sees where and

what the person wants to see and feel irritated to see Pan-Focus image —-> Thence,

Google issued a program for Android called [Google Camera (Google Play)] which

makes an image “Selectively Focused”.

I can make a photo, well Pan-Focused if I need but other than that I’m not much

fond of sharp image = rather like an ambiguous image, double image etc.  🙂

So, I’ve spent many years to seek and try all sorts of “Soft Focus” techniques. = This

Double-Density Pinhole with additional Concave Lens, which made it Wide-angle,

is the best so far.  Not all-rounder yet it produces pretty jokey image.  I like it.   😀

New-DD Pinhole Flower(4)A09A0014

I don’t think even a Botanist wants to see the details of common garden flower.

What we need is just a coloful flowery air !

It seems what I need to add here is, a distant back ground

and the blue sky over it and the Victorian Ladies with umbrella !

Carnival in Greenwich (3) — Impressionists Pinhole Photo

Carniv-Pinhole(1)A09A5172

I expected that the bold color and the shape of Masquerade and the Carnival costume

would suite for the Pinhole photo though, in real life, it was not as colorful or bold.

Carnival Ref(2)DSC_1120-001

This photo is a reference, how it looks like through normal lens !

Carniv-Pinhole(3)62-001

Double density Pinhole creates big hallo around brighter subject,

Carniv-Pinhole(4)59-001

though, this softness seems to be a bit too much to be the Impressionist’s.  😀

Carniv-Pinhole(5)32-001

Carniv-Pinhole(6)A09A5190

(In this post, the results of  two days shot = wet cloudy and fine / bright day

were mixed, hence, it might give confusing looks.)

Leiz 35mm Lens — filter size

Leiz 35mm(1) A09A5137A camera shop who noticed me got

a soft spot in the particular number,

sold me a lens, Leiz Elmarit-R 35mm

F2.8 which has been converted to

the Nikon mount.    By doing so, the

lens lost all the communications to

the camera body = it became totally

manual, hence very difficult to sell.

So, the boss resorted with a pretext as the

lens got the particular  number, I ought to buy.  😀

I don’t mind to have a Leiz lens, anyway in a collection, I have Leica R and Leica C,

and to have one more lens wouldn’t create any trouble.   And my Canon 5D is an

extremely capable camera which can be used with any lens.   THOUGH, Leica is a

notoriously awkward camera company.  = All the system was designed to be unique,

therefore the everything has to be genuine Leica made.  So, even just like a filter = this

lens got a screw size in odd 48mm.  ( Standard filter size is  46mm, 49mm, 52mm, etc.)

In order to use a filter on this lens, a user has to buy a lens-hood which can hold a filter,

and only  special series filter can go into its gap. —– you might have guessed,

they comes with an extortionately high price !

A poor man like me can not afford to buy.      So, the solution is ……… if no matching

filter is in the market, why not to make one myself.

Leiz 35mm(2) 29-001

Outer diameter of the lens top is the same as 49mm filter though the internal

screw is for 48mm —– So, I scraped-off the male screw of 49mm filter, down

to 47mm.   Then this filter ring was glued onto the lens top.

So that, the filter size of this lens was converted to the universal 49mm.

(which even allow the use of humble Tamron lens cap.  🙂 )

(Further screw-on another filter doesn’t cause a corner cut-off. )

Pink — Impressionist’s Pink !

Pink Pink(1)A09A4800

In early spring when the sun is not strong, the flower has to rely on its

hi-visibility color = yellow to appeal to the insects.

Pink Pink(2)21-001

But when the spring deepen with increasing  sun light,  flowers who got other

tactics such as sweet scent doesn’t need to rely on its visibility,  hence  free to

pleasure  with another color. —– Then the Pink become in fashion.  😀

Pink Pink(3)A09A4820

Though, I’m not knowledgeable enough whether those Pink has any effect to the

human psychology. Why a young lady saw something naughty blushs pink (red ?)

or a glass or two drinks makes the cheek pink ?

Pink Pink(4)A09A4844

My friends has been rather wondering, or even suspicious about my eyes or

mental condition if those fuzzy images were the symptom of poor eyesight or

a kind of drowsiness for some kind of intoxication.  😀

Pink Pink(5)22-001

Surely, drunken wouldn’t say “I’m drunk” and I think I can focus if I need.

Pink Pink(6)A09A4871

Pink Pink(7)A09A4873

Pink Pink(8)A09A4887

Those photos above were taken by the lens from Kodak Fun Camera on 5D.

Pink Pink(9)A09A4903

But this photo above were taken by the Wide-angle double-density Pinhole.

Pink Pink(10)A09A4860

And this one is a normal photo as a reference

—– whether you feel boring or sigh of relief (at home).   😀

Shooting Party

Shooting Party(1)A09A4843

Yesterday, I’ve joined a Shooting Party who had taken the photographic course

together many many years ago !

Shooting Party(2)13-001

As they are living in the Greenwich area, party went to familiar

Greenwich Park.

Shooting Party(3)A09A4864

I went there with my Fish-eye lens, 24~70mm Zoom and

Shooting Party(4)14-001

I field-tested yet another funny lens from a Disposable-camera !

Shooting Party(5)15-001

Fish-eye lens worked well as always.  🙂

Shooting Party(6)16-001

And those pictures were taken by another fancy lens

= Wide-angle Double-density Pinhole !

Shooting Party(7)17-001

Shooting Party(8)18-001

The lens (?) worked perfect for ” the Impressionist’s Photography”.  🙂

Shooting Party(9)19-001

Shooting Party(10)A09A4970

(May be I need to have costumed actor and actress ! )   😀

Shooting Party(11)20-001

Shooting Party(12)A09A4989

Easiest way to make impressive picture is —– take picture of grand subject.  😀

Lens from Toy-camera

Lelegance Lens(1)8-001

——- (Photo above :  Left = the edge of the lens has been cut to put a LED illumination.)

On the market, there are many adapter lenses for a Smart-phone or Tablet camera

to take wide-angle or tele-photo picture.  And many people might have

experimented to put magnifier glass or even the interchangeable lens of a SLR on

front of a Smart-phone camera.  = Yes, the lens placed on front, affect the image.

Lelegance Lens(2)10-001

——– (Photo above Left = With additional lens, small letters on a receipt

——– was magnified = looks very sharp.)

Though, in most of the case, any lens put on front, functioning like a close-up lens.

And only the concave lens (such as short-eye-sighted specks lens kind) could make

the image smaller = wide-angle effect but may not give you any sharp image.

Yet still, they works well like as a close-up lens, even like a microscope.

The photos here shows the effect of a small lens put on the Tablet (Nexus 7).

Lelegance Lens(3)9-001

The very lens came from a kind of toy-camera.

(Lens and the Image censer looks same to the £30  Security camera.  😀 )

Still, this lens can project the outside image to the 4x3mm size censor.

It’s mean, use this lens in reverse, the lens can pick up the image of 4x3mm

and projects it to the land-scape size.

Lelegance Lens(4)A09A4798

So, I mounted this lens on the top of  18cm  spray can,  same way as I did before.

Lelegance Lens(5)11-001

——– (Photo here = Bird’s feather  x40  magnification)

Apparently, the lens got  6mm or so focal length and 180mm extension  (together

with camera’s 44mm flange-back) it can give  whopping  x40  magnification.

Lelegance Lens(6)24-001

Lelegance Lens(7)23-001

——– (Photo here = Butterfly’s wing again —–  x40  magnification)

(Though, I wouldn’t say, with such magnification, taking photo is easy at all.

= image in the view finder is very dark and the depth of field is extremely shallow

= with slight movement, the image vanishes.)    😀

—– Coincidently,  I found a collection of Butterfly wing’s photos.  It must be the

result of months, if not years of work (together with a lots of digital manipulation)

= still pretty impressive.
