Yet more Impressionists Photos (1)
I guess, to the regular reader who followed past few posts, those photos must be
looks very familiar. Yes, they were taken by the Concentric Double Density
Pinhole but this time it was by the (say) 4th model. (In fact I don’t know
whether it was 10th or 20th —– I’ve tried so many minute variations.)
Still, this time the diameter of outer hole was smallest 1 mm and the image was
a bit sharper than the one on the post “Quest for Fuzziness” 🙂
They may looks the same though, where “Fuzzy enough, but still show
the identity of what” lies somewhat critical. 😀
When the picture become more and more like a painting, it’s need to
have “likely stage-up” — like this picture, it may need to have
a man and the dogs (if not a peasant) near the foreground. 🙂

Mono Hole – DD Pinhole Comparison
Another day, I demonstrated the effects of the Pinhole to a sceptic in a Park.
So, the Photo above is the reference shot by a Fish-eye lens.
Photo above are the images made by [Wide-angle Mono Pinhole] (Left)
and the Pinhole alone (= Wide-angle lens was removed) (Right)
And here, the Photos were made by [Concentric Double-density Pinhole]
with Wide-angle lens attached (Left) and without (Right)
A Fish-eye image of “Pink Forget-me-not” (I think) — note,
even Fish-eye lens has limited depth of field.
Left was [Wide-angle Mono (single) Pinhole] (Orange cast was caused
by a light-leak.) Right was [Wide-angle DD-Pinhole]
Left = Wide-angle Mono-Pinhole. Right = Pinhole alone and close to the flowers.
(Remember, Pinhole has no focus —– even no view-finder image = too dark.
Therefore all those photos were the blind-shots)
Left = Wide-angle DD-Pinhole.
Right = Pinhole alone and close to the flowers. (The line in the left side
was caused by an internal reflection.)
[]
At least, my friend was convinced that the effect was not by a digital
manipulation though still sceptic about the significance of the image.
That’s a matter of the taste Sir. 😀

Snap-shot by DD-Pinhole
All the photos here were taken by my ” Wide-angle Double-density Pinhole” on
Canon 5D Mk-III. In fact on that day, I went for a walk only with this lens (?)
and the Tamron 500 mm Mirror lens, hoping to see Parakeets.
Original pinhole got about 60 degree of view though, with the additional concave
lens ( from a Canon Zoom lens) the angle was greatly widened to nearly 100 degree.
You may guess that the Pinhole Camera needs to have long exposure though,
with the advantage of Hi-ISO digital camera, such as with ISO 12,500, the shutter
time can be 1/80~1/8 like this outside shot. —– who care with slightly
blared photo on 1/4 or 1/2 slow shutter any way. 😀
The best thing was, no visual details were given in the image,
no further information would be needed. Photo has atmosphere only.
So, the photography (for me at least) purely a fun.
No complicated notion about the subjects or message in the photo
= image or the subjects were there just as they are.
To see the world in clear eyes, the world showed its fuzzy nature.
This paradox is what the Dharma is.

Impressionists Flower Photo — like oil paintings/DD Pinhole Images
These are the Photos of [Wide-angle Double-density Pinhole] 😀
Just a pretty pretty sweet pictures. Nothing else. (Don’t ask too much.)
Now a day, sharp pan-focused images are everywhere, especially “Phone-Camera”
become even more popular. (The smaller the camera, image become more
Pan-Focused) —– Though, our eyes are not Pan-Focus = Brain only sees where and
what the person wants to see and feel irritated to see Pan-Focus image —-> Thence,
Google issued a program for Android called [Google Camera (Google Play)] which
makes an image “Selectively Focused”.
I can make a photo, well Pan-Focused if I need but other than that I’m not much
fond of sharp image = rather like an ambiguous image, double image etc. 🙂
So, I’ve spent many years to seek and try all sorts of “Soft Focus” techniques. = This
Double-Density Pinhole with additional Concave Lens, which made it Wide-angle,
is the best so far. Not all-rounder yet it produces pretty jokey image. I like it. 😀
I don’t think even a Botanist wants to see the details of common garden flower.
What we need is just a coloful flowery air !
It seems what I need to add here is, a distant back ground
and the blue sky over it and the Victorian Ladies with umbrella !

Shooting Party
Yesterday, I’ve joined a Shooting Party who had taken the photographic course
together many many years ago !
As they are living in the Greenwich area, party went to familiar
Greenwich Park.
I went there with my Fish-eye lens, 24~70mm Zoom and
I field-tested yet another funny lens from a Disposable-camera !
Fish-eye lens worked well as always. 🙂
And those pictures were taken by another fancy lens
= Wide-angle Double-density Pinhole !
The lens (?) worked perfect for ” the Impressionist’s Photography”. 🙂
(May be I need to have costumed actor and actress ! ) 😀
Easiest way to make impressive picture is —– take picture of grand subject. 😀

Wide-angle Pinhole Photo
In the previous post, I’ve shown you ultra-wide or Semi-fisheye “Diopt-Pinhole
Hybrid Photos” which mean, it used not only pinhole but combined with an
optical lens too. —– The photos here shows you how the device looks like.
In fact it was a very simple device = Double-density Pinhole was mounted back of
an EOS mount-adapter and a pretty heavy concave lens was mounted on its front.
[]
If anybody try to do a pinhole photo on a SLR camera, (still, it could be done in
all sorts of the way such as a “Photo-sensitive emulsion was painted on a panel
which was placed inside of a huge Shipping container box and a small pinhole was
made opposite wall = Transportable [Camera Obscura] ) in most of the case,
people places a pinhole panel on the camera front where the lens was removed
and obtained fuzzy image of about standard lens. (If a camera used was Full-frame
DSLR, it would be equivalent 45~50mm lens but with APS size, it would be about
85mm lens image).
Because, such as Canon EOS camera has 44mm flange-back (distance from lens
mount to image-sensor) and the diagonal size of 36x24mm frame was 43.26mm
=> If you draw a Triangle 43.26mm wide, and 44mm high, you will get a spread
of the top-angle 54 degrees.
The shorter the hight of triangle, the wider the spread though, you can’t place a
Pinhole panel closer than 37mm (7mm inside of the Camera) otherwise it
obstructs (or damages) the mirror. This limitation lead me to resort with an
optical glass to obtain wider view in the pinhole photography.
So, the inside of the device, you can see blue panel of a beer-can (Photo Center)
and the Double-density pinhole of which the outer hole was 1.5mm and the
center hole was about 0.15~0.2mm. (Photo Right).
After a field test, where I found hopeless Halation in this optics, I realized that
I need to give an Anti-reflection covering to the shiny beer-can. 😀
—– (The photos above shows the comparison = with or without Concave lens.
—– Note : Pinhole Photo has NO distortion or any optical aberrations
—– = Since it is not Optics NOR bends the light. (Save a Diffraction. )
— (Being Pinhole, there is NO focus or Depth of Field = Fun to make a Close-up !)
It needs further refinement still, at least, I got pretty wide “Pinhole Photo” view.
—– whether it was worthwhile or meaningful was arguable though, it was
what I wanted. (with fun ! ) 😀
By the way, the lens I’ve used was cannibalised from a “Fisheye adapter lens”
widely available in the net. (about £10~£15 but quality is what we paid
= I mean Don’t expect too much. —– this is a Fun Project. 😀 )
And about the lens mount-adapter, I’ll talk about it in the next post.

Double Density Pinhole Photo (2)
As I promised before this is the sample photos of “a bit sharper Double-Density-Pinhole
Images”, and those photos were taken by the Canon 5D Mk 3 and Nikon D810 camera.
Both of left images were taken by Tamuron 90 mm Macro Lens with F-setting 2.5 (fully open) 2000th second. ISO 100.
Top two were by Canon 5D Mk3 and the Pinhole image was taken ISO 1600 and AV setting (0.8 sec with +1 1/3).
Bottom two were by Nikon D810 and the Pinhole image was taken ISO 6400 setting.(Non-CPU-Lens setting = Camera says F45. 1/2.5 second ).
—– By the way, I haven’t found why the Canon’s image (Top two) having Magenta and Green cast. Both Cameras were set to AWB (Auto White Balance) though, as cloud moves, lighting condition was not exactly the same, therefore don’t make a conclusion about the color contribution of each camera on those photos.
Above those 6 photos were taken by D810, ISO 6400, F-setting was F45 or F64, Shutter time was 1 second ~ 1/4 second. (with lots of Re-try 😀 )
On this time, Outer Pinhole was 1.2 mm and a smaller pinhole was made in the center of Metal-coted film, and the panel was mounted on Nikon Revers-Ring (hence, it enables to use it in different focal length, with or without extension ring.
And with [Nikon —> Canon Mount Adapter] the same can be used on Canon as well) 🙂
As Pinhole panel was fixed on a revers-ring, it enable ( just 🙂 )to use ordinary Lens-hood (Lens-hood is essential) = two photos above are the sample when hood was dropped and direct sun light hit the pinhole, though some might like a photo with strong halation 😀
By the way, I cover the Camera etc, with lots of stickers to conceal Camera name, Model name etc —– to make it looks cheap, and my friend who actually possess D810 adopted the same attitude = It would discourage a mugger 😀
After dealt with a lots of Pinhole pictures —– ordinary photo looks rather fresh.
It looks not too bad too. Ha ha ha 😀

Humble Lens (?) for Canon Camera = Pinhole Photo / BGR Tri-Pinholes Photo
You might think the Photo here is yet another bloody Soft Focus lens.
It’s not by Soft Focus lens. —– In fact it was not even a lens at all.
——– ( Like latest 5D Mk-III, 5D Mk-II also has Light-leak or it might have caused by the internal reflection
——— on a shiny surface of a parts. Canon can say, it is not in a normal use what camera was designed for)
This is a Pinhole Photograph on Hi-Tech DSLR —– ! ! !
You might be surprised —– or bemused ?
(End of this post, you can see 3-pinhole photo with BGR color-filter for each pinhole )
—————— ( Cutty Sark in Greenwich —– Hand held Pinhole camera, F250, 1/15th Second, ISO 3200 )
One of the best advantage of the Canon EOS cameras is, their Light-measuring
function works without any lens attached on the body. = Light was
measured on the light actually came into the sensor, and the exposure value
was calculated on So-called Stop-down Metering.
In comparison, other cameras are guessing the exposure based on the
information came from the lens, mounted on the camera. Its mean, their
camera was designed to work only with a ROM memory hidden inside of the
lens which gives the information of lens ID, what is the current setting of
focal length on Zoom, F-aperture setting (in a case such as Nikon which allow
you to use an old manual lens) etc, with an assumption of the lens would
work accordingly. (If the lens was F4 in full open, calculates how many stops
needs to close in this lighting condition. Canon measure actual light instantly,
when F-aperture was closed, then select the shutter speed).
The reason why other manufacturers are using this design was, to prevent
the use of a lens other than their genuine products.
(The ID of lens would direct a correction program, such as to brighten up
the corner-fall-off of the wide-angle lens).
——– — ( Cutty Sark in Greenwich ) ——— ( There was a Cinema Film Shooting at Old Royal Naval College )
On the beginning, in order to cut into the Nikon dominated professional
camera market, Canon designed their camera even capable to use with
Nikon lens. Hence, in the early 70th, they sold a lens mount adapter to use
for Nikon lens. (Later, when they gained popularity and their confidence grow,
they stop to sell this adapter).
The First Gulf war was the turning point for the choice of professional camera,
as most of Nikon were stopped to work, thanks to the microscopic sand dust in
the desert. Only the camera kept working was the Canon. —– As a consequence,
News Photographers changed to Canon.
Still, the tradition to allow the use of Nikon lens was kept by Canon, since such
as special 2000 mm lens which was made only by Nikon, Canon has to make a
provision for News photographer to use such special lens on their Canon body.
= hence, camera was designed to functions with the lens which has no Canon
ROM memory. In other words they can work with any lens.
So that, their camera, even Digital SLR can give enough exposure function except
Tv and Program Mode. = still perfect on AV Mode and of course with
Manual Mode.
Above all, with DSLR, we can check the result on the spot, and change
manual setting or exposure compensation on Av.
( Or, change ISO setting further).
——————————————————- ( At Painted Hall, Greenwich )
So, there is no problem to use Canon with a reading glass, plastic flat lens
(Fresnel lens, which gives utterly unsharp image 😀 ) —– even with
Pin-hole, while leaving all the exposure control to the Camera !
= Just use AV mode and adjust exposure compensation.
(Though, Canon 5D gives only up to 30 seconds on AV Mode, if you need
longer exposure to make picture brighter = increase ISO to higher setting,
or change to Manual Mode.
And if you need to have very long long exposure to make all the moving
things disappear, use lower ISO or use dark ND filter together.
Unlike on color film, the adverse effect of UV light (which causes blue cast),
doesn’t affect the color on Digital camera. But never have a direct sun in
the image. Without having any protective glass lens which blocks UV light,
it may damage the Image Sensor).
————————————————————— ( At Greenwich Town )
And, to do this kind of creative shooting, you need to pay attention to
[Good Common Sense] such as, to use View finder cover to block the
stray light from the back.
And use good black paper for making Pin-hole, and make sure, pinhole
should be clean round hole with no paper floss messing on it.
And DO MAKE SURE, keep everything DUST FREE.
Wash your hand before hand.
= a dust particle got onto the Image Sensor is very tricky to clean.
Your acute mindfulness was required.
——— ( Sake of photo, Pinhole was placed on EOS RT body )—– ( To make a perfect hole, it was made on a smaller
———————————————————————————————- piece of thin metal and attached in the center )
A paper with Pinhole, will be stacked on the lens mount of the body by a black
PVC tape to seal-off the stray light.
The Canon DSLR camera has the depth = Flange-back (Lens mount to Image
Sensor) 44 mm, therefore the field of view is the same as 44 mm lens.
And if you use an Extension Ring and stick the pinhole further away from the
body, effectively it would give you telephoto images.
In the most of the case, (as a fine sawing needle has a diameter about 0.5 mm)
the size of this hole is equivalent of F90. (With a focal length of 44 mm lens,
if the diameter of the lens was 44 mm, it would give effective F-aperture F1,
hence, 44 /0.5 = 88 = about F90)
—– I’ve made it less than 0.2 mm = F250. Instead to use a paper, I used thin
aluminium panel of a Drink Can, and pierced it with just a tip of the needle.
The smaller the hole, it would give sharper image though, the optical effect of
Diffraction will scatter the light, it can not give sharp image like an optical lens
anyway, but on the other hand, it gives pan-focus.
(The hole doesn’t necessary in the center = You may put it far side and take
picture always one half, like top-end. Or to put TWO, to make double images,
or one with color filter and so on, there are endless possibilities,
still cost nothing. 😀 )
—– (The samples of 3-PINHOLEs photos with each Red, Green and Blue filter)
—– It would be a fun to play with a camera in open-minded way.
(Try it and find new play ground in photography 😉 )
