Images in Hackney / Fish-eye Vision
Those are the photos, which I’ve clicked the camera on the street of Hackney.
As the default of the optical design, the image was heavily distorted.
Which people dubbed as fish-eye lens effect.
Some people hate this effect saying too unnatural —- ? is it ?
Everybody knows perspective. If you see a thing in distance, it looks smaller.
Assuming, you are standing on front of a huge building, 50m tall and 100m wide.
You are standing from the central door abut 25m or so distance, facing the
building straight. = From this stance, you can just see whole building in one picture.
The building spread side to side about 120~140 degree in angle on your view.
The center of building looks so high on front of you. —– yet far away, you can see
the end of building = it looks not as high as in the center, because of perspective.
While you are standing and able to see whole building in one picture —– Don’t
you think something wrong ? = Despite the building was built with straight lines
both end of the same building looks smaller in the same time. = ONLY a conclusion
is “You are not able to see straight line as a straight line = it’s bent down in both end”
In fact, as the eyes are ball-shaped, we never see straight line in our optical image,
except the one run straight in the center. All the straight lines are in the imagination,
or “Re-construction” in our visual cortex in the brain.
So, I would say, this is our natural vision. = only the center of our eyes shows
straight line, and the both end of image, lines are converging = above, down ward,
below, up ward = you see —– or ARE you still clinging your illusion ?
Ha ha ha. I’m kidding. 😀
(In real life, if you see a straight line looked carved, you got to see a doctor.
Despite we definitely having blind-spot in each eyes, no body see any blank in
our vision, our brain re-configuring the visual signal perfect (well, more or less)
we see the straight building straight — in fact, what is “to see it as it is in open eyes”
a good question. 😀 )

Different Perspective (Cat’s story – 1)

————- ( Here, I’m going to put a photo of my cat when I find the old film 😀 )
It is easy to say to others “See it in another perspective”
—– in fact I used this phrase a bit too casually and too often.
Here is a very good sample —– How good is because the situation was seen and handled by
[Totally different view point] = in deed, it was made by a cat.
[]
I used to live with, up to 9 cats. I’ve risen 18 kittens bore out of my Tom and Queen cats.
(In fact those two were also 6 weeks kittens when they came to my place —– and I didn’t know they become
mature in just over 3 months and became pregnant = and every 4 months the queen cat gave a birth of 3 litters,
hence all together 18 kittens).
[]
As I treated those cats just as another person, (simply I don’t know how to treat them as pets) they had
somewhat same freedom like a man. Their only restriction limitation was that they happen to be the cats.
(they became more like a dog character —– Who said, cat is the solitary animal 😀 )
(If you behave and live like their big daddy, and take care of them like daddy does, they think you are the
same kin but just got big body, they keep play like Lion’s cab play with a tail of parents Lion. They are
very playful mischievous creatures. My guess is, neglected left alone cat became solitary sulky cat. 😀
Most of the cat’s owner is believing that be intimate with a cat is hugging them and squeeze them, but cat
hate it = in the nature, they never being hugged. I never hug a cat, but they likes parch on the shoulder.)
[]
When I was hand-writing a draft such as for an article go together with photos. A cat sat on my desk started
to play with a pencil in my hand. Gazing at the pencil almost captivated by its movement, and rose a hand
and waited the moment to strike. And as the pencil was keep moving try to hit though, to capture slippery
pencil was not an easy play for him.
[]
Most of you may react “Hey stop it” and just whack a cat to chase off the desk.
Or, some of you might think “Aha silly cat, mistaking me playing and teasing the cat by moving a pencil”.
In cat’s view, he might have thought “ Oh, my Lord ( me) having a struggle to contain a funny
moving creature. I should help him to fight against it” 😀
So, he was offering side support to a battle with the evil pencil. As he had no animosity toward
the pencil, when I gave the pencil to him, he just examined it to see it is dead, he didn’t do anything further.
If the cat was playing with me, he was making eye contact, but not in this case.
(Some time they do a football with a pencil on the floor and they are very fond of it)
—– of cause it was just a guess and I was not doing any animal behavior research, he just came up to my
desk to see what I’m doing. —– When they need my attention, they knew what to do.
What clear is, even a cat has their own way of thinking but in totally different perspective.
We human should have a bit more flexible thinking proportional to the size of the brain. 😀
[]
Some animal trainer is saying that we need to see the things in their view point, so we need to see the world
from the ground level, looking up though, I’m not telling you to obtain cat’s view.
—– To see the things in different view or perspective in human life. 😀
To start, what we need is [To know how we are imprisoned in our Ego] and egotistic view.
Just feel that the cat is obstructing the writing, is derived from a thought [what I AM doing and its value is
surpassing anything, let alone a cat !] —– is it ? Who, you are ?
[]
When we need to work together or deal with others, to protect your own interest is one thing, but to have the
job done needs the hands of others as well. = It’s mean, others are also thinking to protect their own interest.
Others might be even more desperate in their own situation. It is necessary to see the situation with other’s
view as well and find the common ground. It is not just a compassion to others, if you deprive others, it will
boomerang to you one day, but this is the Karma.
Karma works in much personal level and quite visibly rational way.
[]
In fact, to deal with others or system is comparatively easy in our life because you can see them and it is not
difficult to see what they are up-to or thinking.
An heaviest difficulty in one’s life is when the person has to face the invisible counterpart, Fate.
The situation involved was too big to asses and the number of people coming into the equation were too many
to consider. The force acting those complicated situation may not be a kind of economics or politics but the
huge scale dynamism. It is more likely the dynamism of the Fate = Dharma.
You can’t see the Dharma like a western God, as Dharma has no personified shape or personality =
Character or behavioral tendency. Above all, Dharma has no Ego or Self, hence you can’t exercise inference
like to other human or to negotiate.
[]
If the Dharma has no Ego, you can’t deal with it with your Ego = Only the way to see it, is you
have to see it without your Ego = See it without your Mind = Mind of No-Mind = Mushin.
It is not a matter to tinker or merely shift your view point.
But, completely abandon any view point (in fact, forget everything first, and empty the mind)
= and expose your whole sensory and your invisible perception = use subconscious hunch
===> wait and see. = Suddenly you will see the view or scope which is totally free from your
view point. = This is the Answer. = This is what the Dharma has chosen.
In this way, you can see the situation in much longer term and able to take the measure in much wiser way.
Above all, as you can have much longer perspective, an immediate endurance wouldn’t cause
unnecessary worries as you know the end result will be OK.
This is what we call Peace of Mind.

Standard VIEW
You may know there is the camera lens called standard lens (and the wide-angle lens, tele-photo lens etc).
Is it a kind of lens, camera manufacturer arbitrarily named it, just for a convenience ?
Or, is there any standard of vision exists ?
Whether you aware or not, you are looking an image, photo or painting with standard view.
You may not believe it —— so, just try, and find it.
Look at a cover photo on the magazine and a poster on the wall ——- have you done ?
Do you noticed, when you see a cover photo of a magazine, with what distance did you look at it.
The distance from your eyes to the magazine was about 12″~14″ (30cm ~ 35cm) as this distance gives
the most clear vision. (unless you got short or far eye-sighted)
Closer than this, you can’t see whole picture. Further than this, it’s too far to see the details.
And if the image you looked at was about A4, the diagonal size was 14″, and the eyes to cover this size
of image, the angle of view was about 45 degrees.
When you see a big poster, you don’t look at in this distance, unless you need to see the detail. —– you
step back and see it from a distance. Then you may realized, in fact you are looking the image always
in the same scale —— if it was small, you give a close look, and see a big image from the distance.
The reason is, our vision in our eyes can see this size of image most clear and reasonably in detail.
If the image spread much wider, like a land-scape, to see the whole detail we have to look around.
And if we need to see more detail such as to read the letters, we need to capture the image, in the
center of eyes, within the angle of about 18 degrees.
So that, to see the image of 14″ size, in distance of 14″ which is about 45 degree of vision, gives best image.
Best image is in the vision of not too wide or narrowly concentrated just in the middle. Middle way in vision.
Therefore the photographic lens which can produce this angle of view has been named ” Standard Lens “.
Before the digital revolution, the camera meant 35mm camera. And the lens which gives this angle of
view was happened to be about 50mm, hence 50mm lens was accustomed to call, Standard Lens.
A photo image taken by a standard lens and printed to about 9″x 12″, viewed from 14″ away, it looks
most natural and having the same perspective. (If the same photo was enlarged to twice big, then look it
from the twice distance, it will give the same perspective —– angle of view is still 45 degree)
—— With this reason, the great photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was using only standard lens
(wide angle lens was for land scape only ) saying ” My lens is my eyes ” and only shot
from the normal eye level. Because, to do his photography, he didn’t want to rely on the optical
effect but the natural way to see the life, just as an ordinary man.
So, the standard view is not only with a camera lens but our eyes having the same standard.
And this standard view, not too wide, not too narrow, just in the middle was what
the Dharma gave us.—— Therefore, this is the visual equivalent of the Middle Way.
—— Though, I hate standard lens. 😀
